taking apart streering column

I am trying to replace turn signal switch in the steering column - a little plastic part that is broken. Is there any special trick to be able to remove the old part? it seems to be riveted to the whole assembly, which I cannot get to in an easy way. There is also a little hole in the steering column, accesible from outside. What is it for? Can someone help?
 
If you are trying to repair it, I think it still has to come out. You have to cut the wires under the column or extract them from the connector. Here are a couple pics:

This shows a ’68 column with the switch removed. There are three screws holding it in.
