did some thread searching. well non of the salvage yards have any mark8's. so heres my question and current problem. my car slowly rises over 200, unless i cut the heater on. but this is only on interstate driving in summer time "4.10's", i can run 55mph all day.
right now i have a fan off a 3.8 stang that is only a single speed "2-wire" that doesnt have a shrould gut is 18" diameter. will the smaller taurus 3.8 fan with 16" fan do better since it has some shroud? and isnt it a 2speed fan?

I am have been running a j-yard taurus fan off a 3.0. Its 2-speed and prolly the same fan off the 3.8. I run low speed only and have a 3-core rad and ac. It keeps my coolant at 185* idling in traffic in the FL summer with ac on.

If you are overheating on the hwy at speeds greater than 55 mph, look into upgrading the radiator instead. Are you running the fan on the hwy when it overheats? It does help. If I go 80mph for a long time, my temp will rise 5-10 degrees. If I turn the fan on it drops back down. You wouldnt think the fan would make any difference at that speed, but it does. I am guessing the fan is not your problem. You will likely have to wait for summer to find out. How about your chin spoiler, is it still in place? Its supposed to improve air flow over the rad at speed.

i am curious as to how one can run hot while 'cruising' on the freeway, yet be cool in town (with what i would possibly consider to be too-little fan).

BTW, though it apparently does not matter in this case, the shroud (and it being sealed to the radiator - no air leaks) is imperative, IMHO.

Jerry said it - if this is all true, it sounds like the rad has issues or you have some other phenomenon going on (collapsing hose, etc while at speed). you are using an aftermarket gauge to make these determinations?

good luck.

i think its because its single speed and not the best seal up agianst rad.do you think that the 2-speed taurus 16" with shroud would be better?

Yes the two speed fan/w shroud will cool better. Your alternator may not be up to the task and a fire could result from this. What alt are you running? Wiring upgrades including grounds? You may be better off sticking a stock fan and new clutch on there. What radiator are you using? Is there a bunch of scale in the cooling system? You may need a flush and start using distilled water in there to avoid minerals. A flush then a radiator replacement are in order most of the time if it hasnt been done to your car yet. I got mine cheap. $130 for a new copper 3-core rad. I heard they have gone up a bit.

This is crazy, but mine might overheat if run for long periods of time at high speeds. I dont do this to it so I will never know. But I stay cool in traffic, Fl heat and all, ac cranking. Up on the interstate I kill the fan and temps creep up slowly. My chin spoiler is intact too. I turn the fan on and they drop like a rock back to the stat temp or normal operating temp on my autometer. If I run at 75mph its steady with no fan, thats my normal traveling speed on the interstate. Any faster than that and it creeps up unless the fan is on. My temp does not go up at idle for long periods in the heat/ w ac on. And you know I am running only low speed off my fan. I should not be able to do this. I should be shopping for the dc control unit right now. Wire it to high and be done with it.

I tested my fan a couple of weeks ago, I keep an eye on that thing. It was pulling 11 amps hot (engine hot, been running) I cant recall the startup amps. but it was below 25A. I tested a MK VIII fan and was very suprised at how small the current load was. I dont recall the numbers off hand, but I can check it again. I'm sure the owner would like to see what its doing on his car.

thanks for the feedback guys. ive never known of a fan doing anything at over ~30 mph. kinda makes one wonder if the pressure delta is not what it should be. interesting.

see this is what im not getting. you are running fine in town right? it is only at considerable speed (where the fan should not make any real difference) that you are running hot. at that speed, the low pressure area at the radiator should be more than the fan can pull - so the seal of the fan should not matter. and if it was a sealing issue, it would rear its head in stop and go traffic.

im just thinking aloud with you guys.

Its a guess, but I think I am hitting the limits of my radiator when I call for 80mph for an extended time. The fan is actually blocking air flow when its not running. If I turn it back on it works with the airflow to provide cooling and the temp returns to normal. At night I can run at 80mph without the fan, the temps are lower outside. So its all really subjective, depending on your climates and specific conditions. I still think he needs a better radiator. :D

Jerry, that sounds good to me - im not smart like Yount, JR, yourself, et al. :)

BTW, your point here was my point all along - i did not think it was a fan issue but rather a radiator issue or something else which happened at speed (collapsing hose, etc, as i said before).
and you are very very correct about it depending upon the exact car and climate.

good stuff Jerry. glad to see ya back in here more. :D

well gt's dont have that small grill like lx. not to mention i have a large tranny cooler in front of radiator. im still running the stock radiator, but its a stock H/C/I motor. i wouldnt think a upgraded rad would be needed for it, might try new hoses and taurus fan. like i said earlier its only when hot outside and turning 2800+ rpms for extended periods. thanks for the replies.

but everyone agrees the taurus fan would be better than what i have now? i do have a 3g alt already.
