I drive a 5.0, my dad just got an expedition with the 4.6, but I dont know much about the 4.6 and its time I learn.

what does modular mean?

Between the 4.6 2v and 4v what major parts are the same?

What parts are the same between the 4.6 and the 5.4?

what bolt ons will fit on the expedition?

Thanks

4.6 and 5.4 modular PI 2Vs have the same exact heads and cams. The intake on the 5.4 has long runners where the 4.6 has shorter. The stroke on the 5.4 is obviously longer than the 4.6. The COPs are the same.

4.6 PI 2V and 4V have the same block but different heads, cams, intake, COPs. Some 4V have forged cranks and some have some do not. No 2V I know has the forged crank. Also, some 4V through the years had aluminum blocks.

Very general answer. I'm sure somone will chime in if my answer is not 100%. There were way too many 4V changes throughout the years/models compared to 2V.

Haven't looked into the 3V yet.

What year is the Expedition? Some of them are non-PI and some are PI 4.6's.

Non-PI 4.6's in the Mustangs ran from 1996-1998, but for trucks/vans/cars I think they were in untill 2001... correct me if im wrong.

PI is the better 4.6. They changed the heads/cams/intake on them and they are superior to a non-PI 4.6 as far as stock for stock performance.

Modular is a term for the 4.6/5.4/6.8 engine family. There are SOHC and DOHC versions of the motors, 2v/3v/4v for each and so on. The 6.8 is the V-10. They are fairly parts interchangable (use common sense for the V-10).

As far as bolt ons for the Expedition, it depends on what will fit where. An intake from a Mustang may fit over the throttle body but the pipe routing wont be the same.

Pullies for a Mustang 4.6 may not fit an Expo 4.6 if the belt routing is different... so on.

Just a suggestion... dont try to make it quick, lol. Anything short of a blower/nitrous/turbo wont get that boat moving.

what is COP?

so the blocks are the same between the 4.6 2v and 4v in many cases. Does this mean that a 2v block can have 4v heads installed converting it to cobra level, with the supporting mods of course. That would be pretty awsome.

The expedition is a 2003 im pretty sure. I dont want to try to make it fast. mainly just curious, but maybe a little more boat pulling power would be nice

COP = Coil On Plug. Its the type of ignition the newer modular engines have. Instead of a distributor there is an individual "coil pack" for each cylinder.

Its nice to have, SUPER easy to work on like that, no crossed plug wires, they are interchangable (on the same motor)... but they are expensive as hell to replace all of them.

Ford wants almost $100/pack... so $800 for OEM parts... lol.

Accell sells a full set for around $230. I think Blue Oval Industries (maybe?) sells some also. As well as MSD and Grenatelli.

I know people have put 4v heads on a 2v block, it is not a direct bolt on though. There are modifications to be made, but yes... it is possible.

For some more pulling power you might find a little hidden in just the normal mods... intake, exhaust, and id reccomend a programmer if you dont mind running 93 octane.

You can get the COPs from Ford supporting vendors for about $50-$60 each, still high but not horrible.

And for the 4V headswap, you need cams, heads, intake, COPs, timing chains, etc to make the swap work plus other stuff I am sure. Not to mention wiring harness or modification to the wiring. I would drop an engine in - much easier.

The only thing I know to increase pulling power (low end) is the 5.4 engine. Everything we (mustang) people do to the 2V increases HP, but not low end TQ.

so not that many people do the 4v swap??? cause it sounds like an awsome upgrade. Seems like anyone doing major mods like HCI to their 2v might as well throw some performance 4v HCI parts on for the same amount of work and probably a little bit more price, but a lot more power plus upgraded to cobra level!

more work and costs more than just buying the whole 4V engine often. Dont forget you need all the lower and upper intake pieces from the 4V which will cost you around $600-700used alone often. PI swap is a great deal easier and cheaper.

how cheap is the entire cobra engine that people would rather take that route? didnt for get about the intake, "HCIntake," but didnt think it would be that expensive. The wiring harness should be the same or easily modified, because thats how earlier mustangs are. I know the 4.6 is harder to work on than the 5.0 but the HCI still seems easier than an entire engine swap to me, should be cheaper than an entire engine too, but I dont know how much the parts are.

are there aftermarket heads for the 2v and 4v or only port and polish stock heads? is there aftermarket intakes for the 4v?

think about it this way, many take the engine out to do a head swap, say it's easier. Therefore putting in another engine w/out even taking the engine apart (which you would in a head swap) makes it a good deal easier. And 96-98 4V cobra engines are cheap as hell (and have a nice aluminum Teksid block) cuz the same engine comes in other non cobra cars. 99/01 cobra and especially 03/04 cobra engines are a good deal more expensive, but would still be a better idea to drop in then converting you engine over to 4V.

03/04 Cobra use the same cast iron block as the Mustang GT.. just slighty modified for the forged steel crank..

jeez guys, get it right.

Mustangs:

Iron:
96-04 GT
03-04 Cobra
00 Cobra R (http://www.mustang50magazine.com/roadtests/13379_2000_cobra_r/index.html)

Aluminum:
96-98 Teksid block rated around 800hp, some builders claim 1000
99/01 Cobras, few got Teksids shown by square hatching in the valley as opposed to diagonal. The majority got the WAP blocks which are a weaker aluminum block with identifying extra ribs designed for impart strength.
