Temp Gauge

Ok, I have another (hopefully not stupid) question: The temp gauge always stays on cold, the the engine is clearly running at normal temp, because a) I get heat from the heater, and b) it's not overheating. I replaced the coolant sensor hoping that would be a simple fix, but no luck. Any ideas?? Thanks in advance!

You need to state the year and model of your Stang so that the better "gremlin shooters" can help you properly. If your temp sensor was not working, (99-2004 Stangs) the fan would continously run and you would throw a OBD-2 code.

I'm shooting in the air but sounds as if you have a gaug-cluster problem, not temp sensor issue.

You can always test your cluster needles by holding the mileage button when while turning the ignition to the on power position, if your temp needle does not rotate to the right completely, then you know what the source of the problem is.

Check your thermostat. Sounds like it's stuck in fail safe. Cheap to replace. I just fixed my sons Taurus with the 3.8l v6.

Thermostat has nothing to do with the temp-sensor's functionability.

Hes got electrical "gremlins, hes not the only one whose temp-sensor is stuck to the left.

Ok, sorry about the incomplete info. Car is a 2000 GT with the 4.6 manual. I was kind of leaning toward a cluster problem too, but I was hoping it was something simpler. I still need to check the fan function, but I haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary on it yet.

Whatever you say... my kids Taurus had the temp gauge stuck to the left. Replaced the thermostat and now it comes up to normal.

Ok, I finally got around to looking into this further. I replaced the thermostat with a Stant 190 degree (stock temp), and now the gauge works!! Fan comes on at the proper time too, although I don't know if it was incorrect before. I dunked the old thermostat in boiling water and it opens and close fine...maybe it was a lower temp part?? Anyway, the temp gauge works now, so I'm happy!

That's cool. I did the "boil in coolant" test before I replaced it.
