My check engine light came on after i put a fan kit in my car. the only thing that was modified was the temp sensor wires were extended. could that cause the check engine light to come on because of different resistance or something? and i did make one dumb a$$ move when i was doing the install. when i was putting the fan on i forgot to disconnect the battery and while working near the starter solinoid i grounded the small metal box next to the solinoid. looks to be some sort of relay maybe? idk. those are the only 2 things i can think of that would have cause the check engine light to turn on. any help would be greatly appriciated.

There is a sticky thread in the top of this forum with technical how-to's. One of them refers to the trouble codes. In that thread, is a link to the technique for getting the codes.
i extended it to the water neck(it is an aftermarket waterneck tapped for a sensor) because my fan temp sensor was to long and would hit the thermo. so i put the fan sensor where the temp sensor went. and i put the temp sensor at the water neck. and its the temp sensor on the front left side of the intake to the left of the first injector.
IIRC Green/yellow and blk/white (maybe the wires are dirty) would be for the ECT.
If your sender/sensor has two wires and it's OEM, it's likely the ECT. Is there an ECT on the passenger side? Occasionally someone will move the ECT to the gauge-sender location.
Do you have a one-wire sender (for the gauge) anywhere?
If the ECT is in the t-stat housing, that could cause some issues because the ECT doesn't see real-time coolant temps in the motor (it has to wait for the t-stat to open up).

Put the electric fan sensor probe in the upper radiator hose. They sell a fitting to do so, like flexalite, you simply cut the upper radiator hose in half and install fitting with hose clamps. The fitting has a place to screw in the fan sensor probe. This way the electric fan controller reads the correct temperature, then reinstall the stock temp sensor back in its original location. I have my electric fan set up this way and it works perfectly. I have the upper radiator hose fitting turned so the fan sensor probe screws in from the bottom so it is hidden from sight.
You can leave the fan sensor where it is, but the ect sensor needs to go back in the heater tube that runs down the passenger side of the intake manifold.
Put it instead where the temp sensor on the drivers side of the motor is....front of lower intake manifold, 1 wire coming off it.
You can move that sensor to the rear of the intake. There is a threaded 3/8 not plug. Remove and install.
