This isn't about a Ford but it is my buddy's car. A 1966 Dodge Dart GT with a 273 V8. The car backfires under light and sometimes heavy load. The coil, plugs , wires, ballast resistor, fuel filter, vacuum lines, battery cables, PCV, and distributer are all BRAND new. Problem is he took it to a shop when it gave a hot start problem, shop said it was distributer and replaced it. Since then it backfires when it didn't before. Timing is set proper and it has not jumped. Also cap and rotor are good and it is electronic ignition so it does not require that external condenser that old Mopars do.
I know this question is messed up, but I do know alot of you know you're stuff .Thanks in advance!

Yeah, actually the carb is set as good as I can get it, 16 hg of vacuum, and proper idle. I personally think there is something to that "new" dizzie, although I don't know what. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Are you SURE your timing is correct? Maybe you have 2 of the plug wires switched around.

I do not know much about carbs at all but I remember a buddy of with a Torino who had similar problems to what you describe. In his case it ended up being the power valve on the carb. (I know, it's probably a newer type without power valves huh?)

Check for vacuum leaks.

Check all the wires to the dist and coil. If you have a wire that is too small, or has broken strands, it will start, idle, but fail under load, and backfire. Especially the coil power wire.

Make sure it is jetted properly and the accelerator pump is working.

Check that ballast resistor again, every mopar I have ever dealt with needed a glovebox full of spares.
