Hey Guys,

My short-term insurance was about to expire and it still wasn't passing what we call "AirCare" here in greater Vancouver (BC Canada) so I did a search on this site for some ideas as to how to beat the emissions tests.

Well, I was on the right track and your posts helped confirm what I already thought.

Yesterday I:

- checked and retarded the timing to 6 degrees
- installed new spark plugs
- installed a new rotor
- cleaned up the cap and scraped the posts (parts store didn't have one in stock)
- installed a new cheap air filter cuz my K&N was gross and not coming clean (little owner neglect there)
- removed, cleaned, re-installed the air induction system up to the intake

- ran it on the highway back and forth and held it a 2500 rpms in the line-up to get the (borrowed) cats HOT enough to test (we had lots of snow here the other day, which is rare for Vancouver - yes eventhough we live in Canada! hahaha and I think that factored into the NOx failure the day before)

RESULTS:
MAXIMUMS to Pass g/km = HC = 0.5000 CO = 9.3200 NOx = 1.2400

4. November 30th: PASS! Yay me!
HC = 0.4797 CO = 2.0160 NOx = 1.0965

Did the above "stuff" to the car on my own, outside in the freezing cold! :canada:

3. November 29th: FAIL! So close but NOx went way up this time ????
HC = 0.5339 CO = 1.5130 NOx = 2.9976

Figured the cats weren't hot enough and the timing might be out from the shop that looked at it back in June. :shrug:

Got an oil change couple weeks later cuz it was sitting all summer.

2. August 26th: FAIL! Even with a cheater method ???
HC = 2.5511 CO = 6.7190 NOx = 1.1864

Car sat for 2 months while I was in europe. I ran a tank of better gas and added a bottle of methylhydrate when it was at 1/8th of a tank (recomended by a shop) and drove it (like I stole it) for 45 minutes to another centre. The guy testing the car couldn't keep it on the dyno (launched it off :( ) and even stalled it :nono: I told then that I wasn't happy with the test results but didn't have time to argue. :(

1. June 14th: FAIL! Dammit - seems close
HC = 0.6663 CM = 3.3992 NOx = 1.1316

A shop swapped my H-Pipe for stock exhaust and took it through aircare.

SO! - I am proud to say that I was able to "beat" the aircare system and qualified my pony for a 2 year pass. :rlaugh: I can now put the exhaust back on and re-set the timing to something more favourable for performance. :D Now if only the 2 feet of snow we were blanketed with in the past week would go away!

I haven't been on this site much lately but it is Greeeaaaat! :nice:

Thanks StangNet :flag:

I'm glad i live on the sunshine coast outside of Vancouber B.C. where we don't need air care because i would never get my car to pass. I'm glad you have your insured.

My last resort was to insure the car in Pemberton or "territory Z" is but that is sketchy when it comes to claims and stuff. I live in Chilliwack now so it was the LAST resort. Hope is close though. hehehe

tell your insurance agent that you need a car to drive when you visit your "bro" or whatever in kelowna or wherever. you must know someone with an addy out of the gvrd. works for many people. there are alot of 'stinky exhaust' stangs runnin aroung down there that never get airscared. you can insure it at your favourite icbc agent.

Thanks for the welcome (back) guys!

Other interests took me away from racing for the past couple years but I'm getting the bug again. Working on the car and accomplishing something with it will do that to ya... I replaced all my dash lights two weekends ago and felt brave enough to take on the aircare thing myself. SUCCESS! :nice:

Hmmm... What can I do next???? ;)

Yeah it's called ICBC <----- blah.

It's a $$$ garbber.

I remember when I was a kid, my mom had a Chrysler SoccerMom Van and it had like 300 000 kms on it and it was smoking and basically a P.O.S. and she failed a few times but the readings were all wonky; fed up she drove straight to another centre and paid and had it tested again and PASSED! They "are variable" is the excuse that the people are trained to give you when you question the validity of the tests.

I am 100% sure that TEST #2 was so bad because the ass performing it messed up. He launched the car right off the rollers and stalled it during the main test. The results were horrible! The guy that tested it this last 2 times was really consistent - I was watching him and the screens like a hawk the first time through. He mentioned that he had a 1990 lx vert that was modded out in the past. I took it back and requested the same guy the next day cuz he drove it so well and cheered him on. He gave me the "oh no not another fail" look when I was waiting for the computer to spit out the results, then questioned me on what I did to it with a really sympathetic look on his face. I was pouting cuz I thought it failed and told him that I adjusted the timing and fixed a few things and was disapointed that it didn't work. He goes, "you did it all yourself?" I say, "yup" and he says, "well whatever you did - you did it well girl - you passed!!!!!!!!" I WAS LIKE "YES! yahooooo" :) That made my day. I went home after and scrubbed all the grease off of my forearms and tends to the little cuts I got from "gettin dirty" with my stang all morning. *big sigh* It was a great day. :SNSign: ok bedtime for me.

Good work on getting it through the smog tests. Thats the fun of living in saskatchewon, no smog at all.

On the other hand its nice to see more canadian stangers around. If you feel like it check out www.mustangcanada.com. Smaller site but not bad. Good luck with the stang.:canada:

I live in Montreal...No smog tests here, but they are talking about it. It would really suck though. I would actually sel the fox and get a newer stang if that were the case.

They are talking about getting rid of "AirCare" here due to the fact that "newer" vehicles are so emmissions efficient now. Heard it was going to be gone in 2 years time but then I just heard that they did extend the contract. More $$$ for the government. :notnice:

Roland69: you're lucky. It's a pain in the ass if you have a modded car. Be thankful.

88GT: I'll have a look at the site one day - super busy so I keep "surfing" to a minimum.
