"The 2011 Ford Mustang GT would pack a brand new 5.0-liter V8 producing 412 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque."

AutoWeek has decided to let the cat get just a little bit further out of the bag this morning following last night's first bit of embargo breakage regarding the 2011 Ford Mustang GT and its 5.0-liter V8 engine. So, by now you've heard that the new powerplant puts out 412 ponies, or 83 horsepower-per-liter. Now, AW wants you to know it also offers up 390 pound-feet of torque and that peak power comes at a screaming 6,500 RPM.

The new powertrain combination will also return 25 miles per gallon, says AW. How does it manage this feat? With an aluminum engine block with cast cylinder sleeves and brand-new heads with four valves per cylinder, vertical intake ports and twin independent variable valve timing. Don't forget the tuned exhaust headers, a forged steel crankshaft with four-bolt main bearings plus new pistons and connecting rods.

And what about the transmission? Your choice of either the 6R80 automatic transmission or the MT82 six-speed manual. We now return you to your regularly-scheduled programming... until the next bit of embargo breakage, of course.

I love the little red . (point) in between the 5 0. It is sort of a retro-revive of the fox legacy.

Who needs pushrods when you've got variable cam timing?

Besides, no pushrod 5.0L ever put out 412hp/390tq, with silky smooth idle, next to zero emmisions and maintained 25mpg before.

maybe ford realized the mullet-mobile is a better bang for the buck and want to do something about it? it's cool but it just doesnt do anything for me like a good ole' fox does.

Fixed. I agree, though. Check out my sig to see how I know.

The pushrod 302's versatility across applications and platforms and longevity over decades of utilization is not to be challenged, though, in my eyes. It's apples and oranges, though, honestly. It's safe to say that, as Ford fans, we can love both the old and new for what they are.

I'm not knocking on the old 302 OHV's ability to make power, but to make that much power, with near zero emmisions, smooth idle and perfect drivability while still able to knock down 25mpg+.....that's not something I've seen our of any N/A 302 OHV yet. Even your previous 306rwph/311rwtq is still a good 50-60fwhp and 30-35tq shy (based on a 15% drivetrain loss) of the 411bhp/390tq rating of the new 5.0L.

...and again, this is from a rock, stock factory engine!!!
