The black paint that comes on new parts

I know for the outside surfaces you have to strip the black paint off and reprime before painting, but what does everyone do with the black paint on the inside on quarters and fenders. Do you strip it and put a more rust resistant coating on, spray something on top of the paint, or just leave it as is.

Also, I haven't painted my dash black yet, does the black paint on the inside of the doors match the dash paint, or do you have to strip the doors and repaint?

That is called an EDM coating and you do not have to strip it off to prime. Just scuff it up with 180, prime, block, seal and paint... done.

The rear quarters I bought from CJ Pony, the guy said I had to strip the paint off the outside and prime. I thought I had read somewhere that depending on the manufacturer some were doing the good coating, some do not.

If the guy from CJ Pony was right, thats why I was asking about the inside panel, I would hate to have to strip that too.

I second the motion, you don't need to strip it just scuff it up. Have done it on more that 8 different panels on 3 cars and all have come out great.

can you request to have the coating or not? My fwd fender apron had it but my aft did not. Both from NPD.

Test the part with lacquer thinner first, If you can't rub the coating off it's EDP ,then just scuff and prime ,if it comes off you should remove the coating ,as starting from scratch ,who has the coating ,and who does'nt depend's on the manufacturer of the part ,also if the supplier want's their sheet metal coated from the manufacturer, sometimes the lesser vendors don't opt for the EDP coating ,I just got a pair of Original tooling front fenders for my '66 they came with the coating.

I believe the dash ,and the door's do match,before stripping my '66 the paint seemed to match ,I will do the same when I repaint. Hope this help's.

best way to strip that? I am trying to take the car down to bare metal before recoating everything and painting it but having a hard time, I have tried a wire wheel on a drill, palm sander and those rust/paint removal wheels (they look like black goey sponges that are hard) but nothing works well. They all kinda work. I was considering getting a random orbit sander but I tried the palm sander and that was next to worthless (120 grit). Best way to strip that stuff of of various items includingthe engine bay?

I'm looking for silver bullet for paint removal too. I think it just isn't easy. I've tried them all. I'm using variable speed sander/polisher with PSA 80 grit 6 inch now.

A da sander with 80 grit paper works well but you would need a good compressor. You could also use a paint stripper. The engine bay is a tough one. So many nooks and crannies. Sandblasting works well but for that you also will need a good compressor.

sand blasting is so messy as is paint stripper. Bah, I guess we might have to suck it up.

I used a sandblaster disk made by 3M in my angle grinder, it will eat any paint off really fast, and leave the bare metal perfect for primer, check it here
