thinking about going n/a again

i'm thinking about selling the kb and going back n/a. here are my main reasons:

- i love my car and i want to drive it, not look at it sitting in the driveway
- the intake temps get really high after driving for a while, which i believe is a main factor in my pinging problems after driving for a while
- i have not been able to enjoy it since i put the kb in because i keep having problems, i'm sure mostly due to my not know what i am doing
- i simply don't have time to work on it myself and i can't afford to pay someone to work on it
- i can use the money from selling the kb and injectors and water injection system to fund some other things that i want to do, like get new seat covers, paint the front bumper, fix the steering, ...
- i love my car and i want to drive it, not look at it sitting in the driveway

if i do go n/a again, i'd probably keep the holley lower and put the stock upper back on. then if i had any money left after doing the other stuff, i might get a better upper, like a gt-40 or cobra ...

if a blown hg is the cause of my current problems, i will most likely put the n/a stuff back on when i put it back together

thoughts?

when you say its running warm, how warm? stock or aftermarket gauge?
the engine coolant temps are normal, around 180-200

it is the intake air temps that are reported by the iat sensor (mine is re-located to the #5 runner) that get so hot. i can datalog that along with a bunch of other stuff with my tweecer. in the dead of winter, i remember seeing 210-220*. and in the cool weather like this spring i was seeing 230*+. i wonder what it will be when it is 95* out? probably even higher

i wish these blowers had an intercooler option, but they don't

or maybe you could sell those parts and start building up a little stroker motor?
the money would probably go to other stuff i need like seats and painting the bumper and the other 100 things i need to fix on it

It sounds like you preaty much have your answer in your post.

To me its all about how much you enjoy it...when you stop that...people tend to get rid of the toys.

I have been sorting out some issues of my own and now that the dog days of summer are hear I am in no hurry. I still enjoy it even if its putting it back together.

I really dont care what 1/4 I end up running or how much hp it puts down. I just want to take the wife out and go drivin'. That and go to the track with friends and try to see if I have a weak link somewere:rlaugh: .

In short if your not happy with the KB there is a good enough market out there you can get some good money out of it preaty easy.

Either way remember have fun...its a hobby.

you have to remember that your only datalogging before the water injection.....i bet that actual intake temps are MUCH cooler than you think when its pumping. I know that with 93 octane the meth/water inj/ is suposed to be like running ~110 octane.

I would be looking elseware if your having problems with pinging,,,,,,what is your total timing? base?

What is it physically doing that is causing it not to drive correctly?

I went through this same stuff when i first installed my turbos, But i finally got it all worked out(i hope) after 4 headgaskets....so, i hear ya man.

you couldn't rig up something from an 03 cobra intercooler wise? they run roots type blowers with intercoolers right?

You gotta remember the intercooler on the 03 is under the blower. To do that on a 5.0 would be impossible unless you have a custom lower intake. I figure you're thinking that the "heat exchanger" on the front of an 03 cobra is an intercooler.

kb makes a custom lower for the mod motors that has the intercooler built in. similar to the way the intercooler is on the 03 cobra
yep my 02 has the intercooled KB kit on it. i dont see how they could make one for our cars unless they raides up the blower a few inches and or made the runners in the lower even shorter

gotta love that instant boost with the KB

i wish i knew exactly what my intake air temps are on the 02 but i do have a temp sensor on the intercooler water and that only gets 10-15 deg above the outside temp

actually, the sensor is in the #5 runner in the lower intake, can't get much closer to the cylinders than that.

and i have not done the water injection thing yet because the snow system is boost activated and it would not be activated under these circumstances. i need a water system that kicks in when the temps are high. i am working on one but i can't seem to find time to finish it.

it doesn't ping until i drove it for a while, say 1/2 hour. then it pings at part throttle when i open the throttle a little, not even wot. i have gone over the tune many times and tried tunes from other people who have lots of experience with boosted apps.

now it is running like crap, not sure what the problem is yet, but there is lots of hesitation and it feels like a miss and i am suddenly low on coolant. too early to say it is a blown hg, but i suspect that

Do it yourself ers I respect so please no flames BUT..If it were me and I was having all this trouble I would either go N/A and max out the best you can then have TONS OF FUN! OR Get a pro-tune. It is the best decision I ever made and the car runs AWESOME!!

p.s. I assume you already addressed whether your injectors were big enough and all. I really can't understand why on turbo'd cars many suggest never to run one without a intercooler. Why this would be any different on a blown app beats me. More heat means more likely ping.

Chris.....I agree...if it's not fun....it's not worth it.........enjoy the car...

Are you runnin t4m0 or j4j1?

When you moved the act to the lower, did you source a fox act?

Did you modify the necessary stuff in the tune to deal with the act location change?

Just a few thoughts ... for what they are worth

Hate to see you are having so many probs.

I've thought about doing a KB so many times. I've always felt if I did, it would take me some time to get it all dialed in to my satisfaction.

If you don't have the time to work all the probs out, I can see how you would be bummed a bit ... thats for sure.

i tried 2 base tunes: one from a kb guy on the eastern shore (md), and the other tune came from a guy (efipunk) on the tweecer site. not sure what they started with. what other changes are you referring to?

the act is the one from my car.

i have convinced myself that the length of my commute (about 30 mins one way), my driving habits (i like to get on it because it is fun, after all that is why we have these cars right?) and the fact the there is no intercooler are combining to make me feel that this is not the right combination for me.

the fact that i have a maf that i could never get a tranfser for (so i had to derive it from my logs) probably is also a factor.

i also think my engine may not be stable enough for this blower. i often saw blow by when i was driving it hard.

I feel for ya Chris :)

You can wonder about this, or that, or what if, ... and what does it matter if you don't feel you are making progress with ANYTHING you are trying to do.

I've had a frustrating time or two myself when trying to learn various things about self tuning.

I have always delt with NA applications only so I KNOW that has made it all the more simple for me.

Wish I could be more help but those thoughts above are about the only things that come to mind.

I do wish you the best of luck with which ever way you decide to go.
