... to a 1994/1995 5.0 instead. Here are my reasons: the 96-98 4.6L is a dog, performance parts for them are MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE, the 5.0 is easier to work on, and I like the 94-98 body style more.

Am I nuts?

No your not nust. I think your doing the right thing... but it looks like you've spent quite a bit on your 96... I'm not too big of a fan for the 96-98 4.6's but the 99+ are pretty nice power wise.

You're already invested in the car. Why loose the money you've spent on the car? Just get a PI head swap kit and new cams? You'd get a huge power increase from that and I don't think that those kits arn't THAT expensive to switch to a new car all together?

get a 331 stroker and a tranny to handle the power and just do a conversion...you get to keep your car plus it will make much more power than any 4.6L SOHC engine combo out there for the same money...

Thats gonna be a lot more work then is really needed. Wiring harness, k-member and the list goes on.

Why not try a 4.6 dohc swap. If I remember there is one for sale right now on the corral or here on stangnet. Plus now you dont have to wory about emmissions laws because some states wont allow you to put a motor in your car that is older than the car. like a 94/95 5.0 motor.

Oh and if a swap is out of the quesiton I vote for buying a 94/95.

you're making this harder than it really is...a swap is not that hard and you can get the rest of the parts such as wiring harness of eBay...Emission won't hassel you over that...just make it snifer freindly...you'll make a lot more power with a 331 than you will with a 4.6L DOHC...but the decision is yours.

Here's what I'm thinking:

If I finish my car:

500 pi heads
100 intake
500 port and polish
600 cams (estimate)
150 headswap kit (estimate)
200 fudge factor
750 labor

360 c&l maf kit/true-flow pipe
370 c&l plenum/accuFab t/b
-----------
3530 for 75K mi engine with maybe 300 HP

Or,

5500 high mileage 1994/1995 GT (there's one on ebay right now!)
300 re-paint hoods, spoilers for swap
0 swap hood, rims, spoiler, billet stuff
-9000 sell 1996 GT (based on cars.com prices)

3000 frpp 345 HP crate engine (M-6007-XB3)
500 frpp upper intake
400 frpp lower intake
350 c&l maf kit/true-flow pipe
320 frpp high flow t/b
260 24 lb injectors
300 fudge factor
750 labor

-150 sell old engine (estimate)
------
2530 for a brand new 345 HP engine

So I'm about $1000 ahead and I have much better ride!

you can definatly get an upper and lower intake combo for the price of just the lower you have listed and itll flow better then fords

Well if you could get that much for your car then go for it. I didn't think you could get that much for your 96.

Not to rain on your parade...but all that work to you car will result in about 260RWHP...maybe little more...You'd be better off getting a blower like a kenny bell and slapin it on the car...the 4.6L is meant to be supercharged...I don't know how your mechanic skills are but it seems liket that would be the ideal thing for you...with 6psi of boost you'd bee making around 300-320RWHP...sort of expensive but definately the moste easieast and the best bang for your buck deal...

4.6 are cool motors once you swap the PI heads and intake. I wouldn't worry about the $600 cams though. You don't really gain that much over the stockers. The $600 is better invested in head porting, or put towards a blower. IMO.
