i am thinking of buying an , i believe its a 1987, thunderbird turbo coupe, it has a new auto trans. are they reallible? are they good in the snow? whats the most common problem with them?
I have one that I bought new. Nice car, but the auto version is a little weak. Plenty of mods out there, though.
Other areas of concern: like a lot of FoMoCo cars in the 80's: paint has been a disappointment. The ignition module (TFI?) was a pain. Various electrical issues - none serious. Not much snow around here, but in the little bit that it's been driven in the white stuff: predictable.
All in all a nice car. And they seem to go pretty cheap these days!
It's a RWD car with some power...how good it is in the snow depends on you. If you're good with RWD and know how it handles, a set of snow tires and some weight in the trunk should set you up nicely. If not, you might wanna consider something FWD.
My g/f has been driving one for about two years now. Most reliable car she's ever owned. The car did come with some minor electrical problems but nothing that takes away from its drivability. As far as snow, it's in the hands of the driver. My g/f got stuck about about 50 yards from her house in snow. I've had the car in the snow and had no problems. I actually thought it did quite well. Great cars....
Well, I personally would never drive mine in the snow, but that's mostly because I don't want it to rust out...but also because the boost can come on so quick sometimes, I just know I'd spin the car out. I have to drive some nasty roads during the winter. I used to drive my '90 LX 2.3 all year round and it did pretty decent, but it's about dead so this year I got a cheap little tempo to drive. Hopin it'll make things a little easier
