Well what do you guys think about the MR. Gasket 160* stat? I had a 180 from cheap napa and had 0 problems and am now using a 195 from advance with no problems, but running a bit hotter then I like when I am beating the piss outa it. Wanted to go with the mr. gasket 160* but it says race only. Just looking for some input.

Don't get the 160 temp thermostat it will actually hurt performance since the car will run too cold and cause bad gas mileage and no power gain at all.I tried this on my cobra and I got some info from some experience tuners and since it fuel injection the computer will try to compensate the cold temp by adding fuel which will make you run rich.I had great luck with Mr Gaskets 180 temp thermostat my car doesnt get over 195 beating on it with the radiator in my sig

Then maybe I will go with the 180* again but is mr. gasket a reliable everyday thermostat for a DD?

Sorry dude, I really don't like poking at people, but WTF is too cold?? Doesn't a cooler engine make more power? I'veresearched this and people who KNOW, try not to run their car as cold as reasonable, preferably between 110*-120* at the track. A dyno pull will tell you exactly what temp to run.

Isn't cold better when it comes to running an engine? I will agree that it will run richer but it will allow a more 'aggressive' tune. It will allow more fuel and colder temperature which translates to more power. The optimum for longevity and performance is 180* but the optimum for performance without suffering too much from longevity is 160*. A 160* will give you more performance but you will lose a couple of MPGs. IMO, run it and get all you can from your car. I've talked about this with an expert so I know this is accurate, JOEL5.0.

That's what I've been using for about a year now with no issues.

The thing with performance (read: balanced) stats is that they shift temp ratins by their very nature. For instance, a parts store 180 might not open fully till 190-197*F, after not having begun to open very near 180. A balanced 180* stat will often start opening at about 170*F and should be long since fully open by 180.

I've started recommending balanced 195*F stats but if you want something cooler, a balanced 180 should work fine. They're what I use as well.

Oh, the stuff about coolant temps: I dont see a 160* stat really affecting A/F trim (O2's going into CL based on time, not ECT readings). However, 190-210*F is pretty optimal for coolant temps.

Good luck.

Here's my take on running too cool of a t-stat. If you are running a 160* stat it's constantly going to be opening recirculating the water, if this is happening there is now way the water in the rad is going to be cooled off properly. The water/coolant needs time to be cooled off (no way around it) and that can't happen if the stat is opening to often. You may end up running hotter because of it. View attachment 328537

Not necessarily for fuel injection believe me I know guys that do tunning for a living on carb and fuel injection the most optimal temp for making power is around 170-180 degrees on fuel injection thats when the engine is at the right temp especially for fuel injection. This is CORRECT for carb engines why do you think guys like to run carb engines and make them run as cold as they they will make more power but fuel injection doesnt respond as well when its too cold believe me I tried it with fuel injection and carb engines. As for the thermostat rating the 160 temp thermostat will actually make our cars run hotter when we beat the heck out of it because the coolant isnt in the block long enough to take away the heat from the block to the radiator the 180 temp seems to be the the one our cars like for better cooling.

Well I guess I will go with the mr gasket 180*. I was running a regular 170* in the summer np. Car would always stay cold. Just went to the 195* to get some good mileage for a long trip I went on. But want to go cold again but want a quality T-Stat.

Now that is just hardcore on the gas milage.

FWIW, if you ever get a custom tune with a switch type chip, the tuner can set different fan on/off temps for you to also get the car running where you want it.

What do u mean hardcore that I would change the T-stat for a MPG more, lol if that is it ur right, I am a big pain in the ass about that when I take my road trips.

And I am actually really desperatly wanted to get a tweecer. My question is though is it just plug and play or do I need to mess with the harness?

provided to me by Joel5.0

Some don't even run a t-stat, just a restrictor. Water and oil temp are very different, keep that in mind.

The chip is a plug n' play affair and the software tuning is a lot of trial and error and LEARNING when you start. The fan settings are quite easy to change, however, just a handful of numbers for on/off temps on the high and low fan speeds.

Exactly what I was going to say, Your always in open loop cycle. Ive always been told and read that 160 is to low for these motors. Yes a cooler engine makes more HP but there is also such a thing called proper operational temperature where the engine likes to be and preforms the best.

The cooling system is a closed loop. If the coolant spends less time in the radiator, it also spent less time in the engine (and picked up less heat in the first place).
In the old days with low pressure upright rads, running no stat could create an issue. These days, not so much. The thing is that people try running no stat when they already run too hot. If you ran hot with a stat, you'll run hot without one. It just takes longer to get there.

The coolant spend enough time to hit *160 in the motor, with a few cycles your basically just circulating hot water to and fro and no cooling is occurring.; Eventually the temps will creep past the 160* temp and continue to head north as the engine gets hotter.
