Thoughts about Nitrous

Hey guys, I want to get some of your guys experiences, or knowledge about nitrous on the mustang 3V motor. I have a friend who is using a 150shot, but went from 298 to 475 rwhp, and 320 to 525 rwtq. Basically it seems like the motor takes really well to nitrous. He does however keep burning up plugs, and that worries me. Usually it is the same plug too, #1 cylinder.

I was wondering if you guys had some advice for me if I try to put nitrous on my car too. I was thinking of going with Nitrous Express because they have worked an advertising deal with the magazine that I write for, but I am open to hear the pros and cons of different systems. Nitrous Express makes it seem like they have a kit made specifically for the motor.

This seems like something that can be done cheap, but I don't want to burn up plugs. Is there a better plug to switch to? I have a 2005, so I probably need to get 1-piece plugs anyhow right? What type of plugs should I use?

Also, I have heard that the input shafts on the tranny can only handle ~450bhp, so he is well exceeding that. I don't want to exceed the power limits of what I have because I don't want to switch out the tranny or make any expensive changes to set-up for it. Obviously there are inheirent risks with running Nitrous, and I am aware of those, but I would have a professional install it, and I would tune it myself.

What is your application? When, where, and for how long do you want to make the power? How much power do you need? The guys I know with nitrous always seem to be fussing with it - bottle empty or valve not open or heater not working etc etc etc. I went FI because I want to know that the power is there when I want it every time I want it. The downside is that having it always available means that I tend to use more often and in these days of high gas prices, I think my fuel bill is probably going to be higher than necessary - but then again it's way more fun than stock!

Yeah, your whipple makes some great power. I don't have the budget to go FI (~$6,000), but could afford to buy a Nitrous kit at wholesale. I want to use it pretty much just for the track. It is illegal on the road anyways, and I don't street race anymore. If I had F/I I would probably get into a lot more trouble. Though there is this guy in texas that is taking off his Rousch charger and going turbo, I was thinking of snagging his charger but it's not a solid possibility.

My friend has issues with his too, same stuff bottle not warm, gotta open the valve, low pressure etc. I guess that's the name of the game. I can deal with those difficulties I suppose, but I just don't want any major woes.

As for the power I am after.......maybe a 100shot would be safe  And I only want to use the shot from 3-6k rpms.

I would think that a 100 shot should be safe if properly set up. You can also add the extras like a remote operated valve, purge system, bottle temp gauge, pressure gauge etc but then the costs start to mount.

I was going to do a purge, to help make sure the line was pressurized. But the other guages are too much I think. Plus I don't think I want guages everywhere. I was going to try to just mount a 2 or 3 switch panel under the headlight switches. And have one be for arming the system, the other for the heater, and possibly one more for the purge if I can get them wired that way.

The remote bottle opener would be sweet, but might tempt me to use it on the street. That might not be a good thing.

The tuning should be relatively easy, I would just modify the IAT adjustments, and reduce a little timing.

I've never been totally happy with the juice. It's too big a pain in the butt. It's really only feasible for track use anyway and since I've developed such a boner for the road course I'm stripping the NOS system out of my car. However, from garage tech discussions I'm pretty sure this is the way to go. No bottle warmers, no extra switches, no worries about bottle pressure, just consistent shots of juice. That's the ticket!

Let me know if you go N2O, I'll let you have my bottles cheap. Always good to have an extra bottle of juice.

That system looks sweet, but G-damn that's pricey!

Did he switch to a colder range plug? Is he running a custom nitrous tune?

I personally like the ZEX kits a lot. I'd run that, gauges, a cup holder switch panel from Speed of Sound, bottle opener, bottle warmer, purge kit, tune and colder plugs. All of it depends on how much of a shot you want to run. N20 does very well with the Mustangs and I'll probably end up going this route myself since it's not going to be putting wear and tear on the vehicle all of the time. ~450 is about a safe range for the transmission. Anything past that and you'll start having problems with syncros, input shafts, the clutch, etc. I also suggest running the Brisk Racing plugs. They are very good plugs. However they do have a draw back, I believe they are only good for 15,000 or 30,000 miles.

Are there any plugs that are not so dang pricey? I'm seeing about $16-20 per plug.

No he was not using colder plugs, but he was running a custom nitrous tune. Not just a ordered tune, but an actual dyno tune. We kept looking in to figure out why he was breaking the #1 plug only, and it may have had something to do with the spray angle that he was using.

Stupid Bottle Pressure seems to be a big pain in the ass about the whole deal huh?

Yes, bottle pressure IS the big pain in the butt; even a full bottle won't be at the proper pressure on a cold day and even a warm bottle chills pretty quick once you start spraying. That's why I like the NANO system, I know it's pricey but it's the price of having spray that works when you need it.

By the way, N.O.S. recommends a one heat range colder plug for nitrous use and recommends that you pull two degrees of timing for every 25 HP over a 75HP shot. Up to 75HP they feel it's fine without a tune or timing change on the S197. They also recommend a clutch upgrade if you're going to be using slicks or drag radials with nitrous. Not my .02, that's straight from the Nitrous Oxide Systems installation instructions/tech line.

I'm going to look into the new plugs. Kinda scared about changing them though. Sad huh? Here I am tearing apart engines and porting superchargers every weekend and I'm actually afraid of breaking my stock spark plugs.

Well my friends setup is just nasty! He finally got a new clutch in there to hold the power of his nitrous setup and he is now putting out 550rwtq with my mods and a 150hp shot. Jimminy Crickets!

I have got to get my hands on this stuff.
