Hey everyone, I saw this on allfordmustangs.com and wondered if anyone has done this, or what they think about it??? Thanks! Below is the procedure...

"The Throttle body and Intake can get pretty dirty after a while, the oil and gunk deposits in them can reduce your pony's performance. Also after lots of traffic driving your heads and valves might get covered with Carbon deposits that can cause PRE-IGNITION, which is as bad as detonation.

To clean it all there are a few things you can do, either remove the intake and heads to clean them OR the EASY WAY. use Carb Cleaner or BRAKE FLUID to clean them. If you use Carb cleaner just make sure it is O2 sensor-safe. Brake fluid is.

This procedure is for 5.0 engines only, 4.6 should not try this.

Now disconnect the hose that runs from the passenger side valve cover on the OIL FILL TUBE to the Throttle body hose. Disconnect at the valve cover side.

Start your engine and either SPRAY the carb cleaner into the hose or Immerse the hose in the brake fluid bottle. Do this 1 second at a time and rev the engine a bit if it starts to stall, repeat the procedure until you are half way on the cleaner or brake fluid.

You will see lots of smoke from the exhaust..this is normal and a sign that the cleaner is working.Take the car for a ride and repeat the procedure the next day."

Never heard of doing all that. I usually take the throttle body off and then the sensors on it, spray the heck out of the throttle body and the plenum, and dry it really well. Sounds interesting but I wouldn't prolly do all that the article said. Heck, what knows, maybe I'll do it if I'm bored this weekend.

I never heard of doing it that way either ... kinda makes sense and is innovative though. Oh ... and the smoke ya see doesn't really mean it's working, it is just that by forcing all that carb cleaner into the intake, you are forcing it to run VERY rich for a few seconds, it's just unburnt gas and the carb cleaner!

i sprayed brake parts cleaner on my lower when it was off the car and that seemed to work good not sure if i'd want to try all that with the car running but i guess if its in the mag its ok doubt they would tell you something that would mess up your car

I'm not sure but i think somewhere I saw that some tb's have a coating of some kind and using carb cleaner will remove that coating which is a no no.

Plenty of people have used carb cleaner on there throttle body and as far as i know it hasn't done a thing to hurt it. There is throttle body cleaner but it's pretty much carb cleaner in my book. Ford wrote a warning on the stock throttle body but I think might have been so people wouldn't put just any ole thing in there and expect to not do any damage when cleaning.

Awhile back I took my intake apart and notice quite a bit of carbon desposited on the inside of the intake. Is this normal and will brake fluid remove this type of deposit? If I remember correctly it was a pretty hard crust.

Thanks,

Go get some seafoam. It's made to be sucked into your intake and it will clean out the carbon. It's like $6 a can.
