throw out bearing questions

I've searched the threads and figured out that I've got a throw out bearing problem. I was wondering if there is anyway to help it last longer since money is tight. Does it get very loud(right now its only a little bit anoying)? I've been told that when one of these three go out its best to replace all at the same time. throw out bearing, clutch, and pressure plate. Does that sound about right? I'm probably going to attempt it myself since I'll be down in that area changing the U-Joints anyway. Any advice would be appreciated, and also does anyone know about what a job like this might cost at a shop just out of curiosity? Any other comments?

With a little practice it gets pretty easy to re and re a tranny, my advice is to take the tranny off in 2 section, the gear box then the bell housing. I found that it is easier to get at the bell housing bolts when everything is out of the way. Also go to your part store and buy a clutch alignment tool, it's just a plastic input shaft. Trust me it wil save you alot of aggravation!

really depends upon how old your clutch set up is - some guys have noisy TOB's after 2K miles on a new clutch. but if you dont know how old the clutch assembly is, etc, i would swap it all out, as you said.

some TOB's are better than others, so choose wisely. check the retainer, clutch fork and fork pivot while in there.

if you do a clutch job, check the rear main and pilot bearing.

If you are doing the pilot bearing, a little tip on how to get it out. Fill the hole with grease completely then get a punch or bar that just fits inside the pilot hole, give it a quick tap with a hammer and the hydraulic pressure will force the bearing out, works for me

Since your in there Change everything... Rear Seal, Pressure Plate, Disc, TOB, and Pilot Bearing. Even get the flywheel resurfaced would be a great idea. Now's the time when you have it all apart since sooner or later all that stuff is going to need to be replaced.
As for the TOB, I've known guy's who drove a very long time with there bearing just whining away and get away with it... Not saying that's a good thing though. A badly worn TOB could cause even more harm to the input shaft bearing retainer (The Part That The Realese Bearing Slide's On) and pressure plate. The sooner you fix it the better, and no it's not very hard to remove the tranny, bellhousing, Clutch Assy., rear seal, etc. etc.

if doing a complete clutch, always resurface/renew the flywheel. good advice from Shon.

a lot of guys have noisy TOB's (sounds like crickets). in the meantime, you can try dialing in some preload on the cable. it is a common solution to quiet them up.

Don't use one of those plastic throwout bearings..........the one that came with my SPEC clutch just seized after a year - I just got everything back together a couple of hours ago ...............I used a Centerforce bearing this time.
