ok so i hear a squeaking noise from my car today, take my friend for a ride he says its the throw out bearing squeaking. i hear a little noise from the car and it stops when you push on the clutch so thats what he thinks it is. so questions are can i still drive the car like this and for how long?? i dont want to get stuck somewhere not able to shift. it shifts fine now just a small noise. any1 know an average to get the T.O. bearing replaced ? i know alot of people do the clutch at the same time so whats the average cost to do them both??? thanks in advance :spot:

well a dual friction Centerforce clutch cost me $330 canadian funds, and a throwout bearing cost me $50, tho that cost was quite high because I have the obsolete SROD 4 speed transmission that came in late 70's/early 80's mustangs. So expect the throwout bearing to be a little cheaper.

If it is only making noise because the TOB is chattering against the diaphram fingers, then preload can help.

However, if the bearing is coming apart (pressing the pedal loads it up so it shuts up), then it and/or the bearing retainer can get eaten.

Good luck.

how do i adjust my cable? i have never had a stick shift before so i never worked on 1 before, i may just take it to a trans shop and have em look at it i need a speedo gear also so kill 2 birds :) thanks guys

Are you moving or at a stop when you are pressing and depressing the clutch? I have had people think there throw out bearing was squeaking "because it stopped when they pushed in the clutch" It ended up being the front u-joint. If you are not moving is the squeak there? Or does it apper when you start to take off? Just to narrow it out I would check the u-joint. BTW if you need to replace the throw out bearing, do the entire clutch while you are there. My zoom hi-po was about $230 and that was with the t/o bearing. Another $35 to have the flywheel turned. And a couple of hours underneath the car.

it was when the car was sitting still it does it all the time when the car is running, it just started doing it the other day. it makes the noise when you start the car up and stops only when the clutch is pressed in

this just happened to me about a month ago. Would put a tiny bit of pressure on the pedal and it would stop squeaking. My car is all stock with 68,000 original miles, far from abused. So i take out the trans and i find that the aluminum retainer has some nicely worn grooves in it and this has caused the throwout bearing to wear off center. (You can actually spin the bearing in your hand and it moves in an oval type pattern.) So i got a steel retainer, new bearing and put it all in and it is as quite and smooth as stock. This is with the stock clutch quadrant so I can't adjust it. I also took the trans. top cover and rear tailshaft off just to check things out and put synthetic fluid back in it. I recommend taking the trans. out and looking at what u have. No need to adjust something that is screwed up.
