Throw-out Bearing

My TOB has been whining for about 2months. I thought I'd change it when new motor is installed. Today the whine turned into a "chirping" sound. How long before it fails completely? Can I just replace TOB or does the whole clutch need replacing? What the best TOB? I've heard the stock one from Ford is best?

I've always used whatever TOB came with my clutch, when I replaced it. I think they all end up chirping at some point, but I've never had one give me a constant whine. Mine's been chirping for somewhere around 25k miles, so I don't know if it's due for failure anytime soon. For a temporary fix, you could pop the cover off over the clutch fork, and carefully apply some grease to the friction points between the TOB and clutch fingers. Someone had the idea of using a spray grease for this recently, but that idea frightens me if I were to get some on the clutch disk.

You might want to have a spare input bearing shaft retainer on hand in case you need it too.

Thanks, I am just hoping to replace the bearing and not the entire clutch. I think '95's came stock with the steel retainer...so that should be fine.

I'm not 100% positive, but I think I had to put a steel retainer on. Could've been on one of the 4 transmissions this car's had though...

I dont think SN's came with steel retainers. Only snakes.....

I say to pick up a steel retainer and a ford TOB.

Yeah, I am gonna pick one up tommorrow and install it. When I start the car up there is a load screeching noise which stays at idle. As the car drives it disappears. When I depress the clutch I feel and hear a grind noise. I left the car in the garage and used the wife's Hummer to go to work today.

I went to replace the TOB which was shot. When I removed the tranny any housing the TOB just fell out in pieces. The fingers on the diaphram were scored. I decided to replace entire clutch. I didn't realize that the stiff clutch pedal was from the worn diaphram, I thought it was from the cable that needed adjusting. Anyway after the install, no more chirping from TOB, and the pedal travel is smooth and easy.

Make sure to put anti seize compound on the retainer, that will ensure nice movement for the life of your clutch, grease gets hot and eventually melts away.
