Throwout bearing?????

change the bearing retainer on the transmission... the stock aluminum ones where out easily and cause the TO bearing to rattle or squeak when tha clutch is not depressed... i would recommend buying a new STEEL bearing retainer... they don't wear out like tha originals... check out 50resto.com for your best deal

How hard is it to install one of these, and how much time does it take? I have the same problem as 87ttopstang. I adjust my clutch cable and it stops clicking/squeeking for a couple of days, but then comes back.

well, to change the bearing retainer, you'd have to drop the transmission and take the clutch and all off to slide off tha old retainer... then you replace the retainer and everything else in reverse order to reinstall it... shouldn't take too long if you have a lift or a couple of high jack stands and someone to help

Damnit all to hell. My exhaust is welded on, not bolted on... so I guess I can't do this. Ah well, my clutch and throwout bearing are only about 2 months old now, so maybe they're still being broken in.

in order to get that steel bearing input shaft retainer on, the transmission does have to come out, however, the tranny slides right out, and the bell housing, clutch fork, and clutch do NOT have to come out.

however, I'll bet the farm that that's not your problem. Your clutch adjustment is slipping for some reason. do you have an adjustable cable or a firewall adjuster? If you have an adjustable cable, your adjustment is loosening up at the fork, if you have a firewall adjuster, its backing off and loosening there. If that is not happening, your cable is stretching. What is your exact setup right now??

it is very common for throwout bearings to squeak when not enough preload (pressure) is on the pressure plate. The mustang clutch is designed to have a constant amount of preload. You need to adjust your clutch properly which will take care of the squeak. In fact, with it set right now, it's a little stiff getting into gear, and it picks up right on the floor. all of this will be fixed with a simple adjustment.

I wrote a really good article on all of this. You need to read it. Adjust that clutch properly before ripping anything out.
