time to find a 9" Where to look?

What are good vehicles to get 9" rears out of? I want to end up with a disc rear and 31 spline axles.

I've read about the Lincoln Versailles rearend coming with disc brakes stock, but how does the width match up with the stock 68 rearend?

What about axles in later 69-73 mustangs? Would those work?

All the Versailles rears were 28 spline. The width is 1" less overall than a 67-70 Stang rear. Bolt in swap. You WILL have to adapt the parking brake cable and the brake hose to a 68, the hose just needs an adapter fitting, which can be bought locally. The 9" Versailles rear was also an option in the Granada and Monarch, so it pays to check these out when you run across them in the junkyards. The one I put under my 67 Stang, back in the 80's, came from a Monarch. To get 31 spline axles, you'll have to order them aftermarket. Some of the big 70's Lincolns came with 31 spline 9" disc brake rears but they will not fit a Stang without modification ( too wide and had 4 link suspensions)

Not an expert here like Mr Hearne , but after looking into this idea for my project, I finally talked to the axle shop that would be doing the fitting of the 9" to my '68 as well as the drive shaft; this is what I found. Purchasing a unit from them, one that has already been built, was the least expensive way to go (for me- not qualified to do this level of cutting and welding like Hearne can). I was quoted $1200 for the entire rearend, w/ disc brakes, 31 spline axles and 3.50 gears. This was a posi center center section with new insides, new bearings, seals, etc.

I decided to stay with the 8" and a new center section; posi and 3.55 gears for less than $200. It will be plenty for my light duty 400+HP supercharged grocery getter.

$200!!!?????! Where did you get it from? Any details would be great. I have 3.00 open 8" and looking to upgrade to posi 3.90's. What/who do you suggest?

Assuming you never do a full power launch or never get good traction you may be right. There's plenty of folks here who have blown up their 8s with less than 400 ponies and no supercharger.

Fellow Stangnet member. I do appologize for the "new" comment. When the axle shop looked at after the purchase, they said it looked as good as new. I found a few cars at the local salvage yard that have posi's in 3.25 and 3.55's. you just have to look for them. I was not able to find any local for a month, so I went online. Typical.... now I can get them.

Edbert- I am not a drag strip type, so I am sure I will be ok. Back when I was over-testosterone challanged, 20 some years ago and got my fair share of "exhibition of acceleration" tickets, I would have had a problem. (9" w/ 3.75's, with huge tires out back and 400hp 351 under the hood) Man that was a fun time!!!!

What kind of cars in the salvage yard held the 8" posi? I guess I can do the gear change myself. Do I need a press for the bearings?

$1200 is a damn good price for a complete disc brake, posi trac, 3.50 geared, 31 splined axle 9" That's about half what the shops like say, Currie charges. And thanks for the "roses" but while I can weld and do some fabrication, I'm not up to the level it takes to narrow a rear.

Opps... Pedestal too high. Yeah, the price was crazy. I wish I could have done it, but with all the other toys I put into the engine, the cost far outweighed the benny's. Now if I can just get the little stuff finished I can find out what it was all done for in the first place (complete tear down, engine rebuild, trans rebuild, body work, and new interior.)

Two years in the works, a bit of money... priceless, when I hand the keys to my son on his 16th birthday.

you could go with the Versailles rear end but good luck finding one. i just finished building my rear end 9" 31 slpine. i got my rear end out of a 69 couger it would fit your car perfectlly. rear ends from 67-73 mustangs and cougers are all interchangeable as for the disk brakes i bought mine off ebay for $250 off a f150. i had to get
f150 houseing ends to fit the the disk brake backing plates and new axles made to to fit my car, and with large bearing.

Only way my son gets to drive my classic stang when it is done (well, first need to have a son) is if he doesn't get a single ding on his driving record and graduates high school with a good gpa. Even then it will only be once (until i die of course, then he gets it)

This is my 5th '66-'68 Mustang. The kid is 7 now so that gives me 9 years to enjoy it. Next purchase... 2006 Roush Stage 3 Mustang, or the 350GTR ($$$$$$$). Then I can get back to a '66 fastback I have been thinking about for 10 years. (secret location, in a garage in the country, under a tarp, owned by a real old family friend, that likes me...)

Back to the thread, I will look into the 9" rearend on Monday after the holiday. I think the price I was quoted would hold if your interested.

To tease a little more... it is a GT with original Shelby roll cage... yup it was raced at one point. Original 289 with all the Shelby "stuff"... and a number on the side. But trust me on this one, I am the only one, this person will ever give it to. Kind of a "will" thing. If you know what I mean.

I just had to promise never to sell it. It's super safe where it is (know body else knows where it is) and super clean, and rust free for the most part. Colorado is good to a Mustang. Sorry to toss all that out there but it kind of a new bit of info for me so I had to tell someone.

time to find a 9" Where to look?
