Currently I have the engine, transmission, and steering colum out of my 1970 Grande for an auto to T5 swap.

I was wondering if I should take this opertunity to rebuild my steering components since I have such easy access at the moment.

Can anyone tell me how to check a control valve to see if it needs a rebuild?
The steering box seems OK, but any advice on checking it would also help.

Remember the engine is out of the car...

Thanks!

It couldn't hurt, especially if you decide to replace the gearbox.

If it doesn't leak, and doesn't yank to one direction when you start to turn, just leave it. They can be a real pain.

i agree, if it's not leaking or really loose. you can tighten up the gear box adjustment and greasing the control valve pivot ball (there should be a greas zerk there) will help tighten up the valve some. many people don't realize that ball joint/pivot also needs to be greased regularly and can be a major contributor to premature control valve failure.
