timeings perfect Has a lug at idle

if your friends is stock and yours had any work done to it! like a cam or heads or anything like that you should have beat him! unless it was driver error! as for finding out if it has any work done to it like a cam you would have to take it apart or ask the previous owner i would think!

There are just too many variable to just compare who won a race. What are the mods to his car? is it an lx, vert, gt? 5spd or auto? gears? Whats done to your car?

Is your car mechanically sound. What about a full tune up...cap, rotor, plugs, wires, fuel filter, clean MAF and TB, clean IAC? O2 sensors, ECT & ACT sensors? I would do all these things before thinking it may be something drastic like an unknown cam. especially if the idle smooths out after a while. Cammed cars dont just randomly smooth out. I would check all the above first...then reset the idle and timing and go from there.

Cams don't "go away" after awhile. You could even have the distributor off a tooth and think you have the timing perfect.

Besides if you really had a "radical cam" you should have altered your timing to correspond with the duration/lift and benefit from it.

You probably have a code in there you need to find out what's up. Go to Advance or AutoZone and get the free test to see what codes you have. It's not uncommon for an EGR to stick intermittently.

Stock 5.0 numbers are well documented. Go to a strip and see what your times really are to compare with factory numbers.

Do you weigh 400lbs? I do when I have a passenger.
