Timing and Cooling

Are there any basic rules of thumb to get my car to run a little cooler by adjusting my timing differently?
more advanced/ more retarded?

yeah, you need alot of advance at cruise. around 40deg btdc

I had a car that overheated due to timing being advanced too far: backed it off and never overheated again. I'm sure these guys know better than me but I had to give my experience with the problem. Maybe we can get further explanation of why they say to advance.

and dropped the water temp about 9*
will test again tomarrow at high noon .

when I advance mine it runs hotter. Then again I'm at 38 degrees at 3000rpms.
