I am going with a new cam and decided that while I am in there I should change the timing chain. Would it be more benafical (spell) to go with the gear drive since that eliminate the chain all together?
thanks
I don't know personally about any benefit or not, but I know one guy that has one on a 351 and he loves it. Then again he doesn't do any of his own work on it. I also know another guy that went back to the chain because he had problems with the noise of the gear drive. I think they sound sweet!
I agree. Get a double roller chain. I have a gear drive sitting down stairs on a shelf. Didn't install it because I heard another vehicle that had one and it did sound nice. Kinda like a blower whine. that being said it had none of the kick that a blower vehicle would have. If the vehicle is going to sound like it is running a blower then it better have one. Just my thoughts. The exhaust is loud enough i don't need to listen to gears whining aswell.
quick86, I highly recommend you find someone who has a gear drive and listen to it. It is noisy as fu..
I'm with everyone else, a good double roller timing chain will work perfect. But if you're hell bent on a gear drive, again, try and hear one first so you know what you're getting into.
Had gear drive on my 55 Chevy. Car couldn't run 17 second pass, and no one would race. Sounds wicked, just don't buy a big radio, you'll never hear it. Double roller will do the same work.
I have an Edelbrock gear drive. It's not obnoxious ( I do have a blower) as others I've heard. You will need to grind off the chain oiler inside the timing cover. I love it.
