I have an 87 mustang with a 302 and took out the engine to clean it up and repaint it. Well when I did I lost the camshaft thrust plate and bought a new one to put in. When I put the engine back in the car and started it you could hear the timing gear rubbing against the plate so I took off the timing cover and timing gear to replace the camshaft thrust plate with one I got from the junkyard thinking I had bought the wrong one. When I pulled it out you could see the deep wear marks from where the timing gear was rubbing on the new thrust plate. When I compared it to the one from the junkyard that I pulled from another 87 mustang they were exactly the same except the one from the junkyard had no wear marks on it. I was wondering if there is a spacer or something I am missing between the timing gear and camshaft and if the timing gear is even suppose to touch the thrust plate?
Thanks

i dont think so. I have everything setup just like in the picture. Maybe I'll just install the junkyard one and see what happens. I just don't want to have to change the plate again if it rubs and was just making sure.

Is it rubbing on the Thrust plate bolts or around the inner radius of the thrust plate?

it's on the inner radius. I saw the marks on the junkyard one and it looks like it's suppose to be touching there but mine has a deep groove already cut into it from the rubbing.

Are you sure it's a stock piece? an engine from the junkyard could have had an aftermarket timing set on it already. If it's afterrmarket, comp cams (and some other companies) use a torrington bearing between the camshaft thrust plate surface and the rear of the gear. Make sure that you have a stock piece, and if you don't, be sure that bearing wasn't misplaced.

If you're sure it's a stock piece, make sure the the thrust plate and gear are on correctly. (There's an oiling groove on the BACK of the thrust plate.) Check camshaft endplay as well to be sure.

Here's a picture of a torrington style thrust bearing to help you visualize it:
