timing question

i went go set my timing this morning and the numbers on my balancer are gone(just from it being so old i guess ) i sprayed it with carb cleaner just to see if that would work with no luck. any way around this so i can check my timing??

spin the balancer a little by bumping the starter, the numbers don't go all the way around it.

i did that. they are just non-existent

aren't they etched into the balancer, if so they can't come off unless grinded off. get a wire brush

exactly... I just finished some routine maint. on my 1971 Ford P/U ( 302 mtr ) and after changing the oil, I decided to check the timing. The marks were not visable, but with some wd-40 & a little rubbing they soon re-appeared.

they ARE etched...just covered...clean it up

i use simple green and some wd-40
