When using the timing light, does it matter which plug you hook the light up to?

It's normally hooked to #1

Normally? (not trying to be a smart ass). I've never put a light to anything that wasn't attached to anything other that the #1 cylinder plug wire. It's always front passenger side on v-8's.

yeah i've never tried it, but don't think you could use anything else but 1

And some inductive timing lights have an arrow on the clip to let you know which way the clip should face.

Okay, this timing really confuses me.

Here is what I've picked up from threads and research.

1. Unplug spout
2.Loosen distributor

But im still confused as to what I will be seeing when I point the timing light. Do i point it at the direct top, the side...i duno..does that even matter or will i see the same number from any angle the light is at?

Thanks for puttin up with my noobiness.

i wouldn't mess with timming the first time without an experienced helper, man.

Well I understand the basis of it, and i know mostly how, but im down to learn on my own that's why I am asking these questions, so i don't mess it up.

i lean over from the passenger side a little and i get a clean shot on the "time" bracket. Mark what time you want on you balancer with white out or nail polish and turn the dizzy until it gets there. shut down and spout in.

The timing bracket is attached to the front cover on the passenger's side.

If you want to make your life a little easier.... Get yourself a silver sharpie to mark the balancer at 10deg, 12deg, 14 deg, whatever your looking to advance to. Those little lines can be a pain to see. I marked mine at 10 and 12. Didn't like the way she was running at 12, moved back down to 10.

Happy now.

Markers make it a little more eye friendly, especially when you have to look through all the accessories to see the indicator and balancer.

You should have someone by your side who has done it before and do not forget to put the plug back in after you modify the base timing.

10 degrees made a noticeable difference to me. Some others on the forum go higher. Typically around 12-14.

The time bracket mounts to the timing cover, and "surrounds" the balancer. The balancer has marks on it. Get a 1/8" wide WHITE marker and mark 10,12,14 on the balancer.. It will save you a lot of headaches. You should clean the rust off of the balancer first, so the marker stays on it well.
