Timing/Temp????

Timing/Temp pulling my hair out please help????

OK heres the deal, I just but my 95 5.0 about a month ago. i just put a full exhaust on it this weekend and decided that it felt a little sluggish so i decided to check the timing, I pulled the spout out, fired it up and checked it, it was 5*ATDC, right there i was confused. These cars come stock at 10* BTDC right? any way i advanced it to 12* and took it for a test ride, it ran good except it made alittle noise in 3rd, dont know whether it was pinging or an exhaust leak but i am running 89 in it. and the temp also jumped to the L in normal, while before i messed with the timing it was staying in between the N and the O. BTW i have a 180 * highflow tstat in it.

Could the timing been set that low to hide a cooling problem? or maybe a detonation problem? what would you guys think the culprit is, thanks for your help
Russell

BTW i put the timing down to 8* still heats up??????????????????????

The balancer might have slipped, so the timing had been correct, but the point of reference was now off. But you should have really seen some issues were that the case. You could use a dial indicator to get it to TDC and see where the balancer is. Do ya think that is possible?

What are your ambient temps? FWIW, I have to run 91 octane at 8* advance when it is over 100*F.

Good luck.

the car was a dog and didnt really like to rev quick thats why i checked the timing, i figured out that the detonation i heard was actually the pasenger side header leaking, so it wasnt pinging when i had it at 14, just heating up. and at 14 it ran awesome, major difference. thanks

With the spout in it will be all over the place...the computer controls it...you're right with the spout out though-10*btdc. Carefull with the timing that high, detonation isnt always heard...but with the temps rising that quickly and that high it still might be detonating

ok got the fan wired to high at all times, sits at the n with my 180 tstat, but it still pings in the midrange, tomarrow im going to try to run 93 instead of 89
The GT's run a bit too much computer mandated timing advance - Grady can provide tons of info on that.

I live in the desert and run 91 octane at 8* base timing (set with the SPOUT out).

some things that can help are: cleaning the MAF, IAT, ECT, running some top end cleaner, etc.

Good luck.

The scurge of the SN95...pinging....Search and read up on that one....It can be tough to cure...
State of tune is good???, plugs/wires, etc???
You may wanna try a topend cleaning such as Seafoam?? Carbon build-up can be a contributor to pinging...
