I got a timing light out today at school and my timing was was retarded..like 10...so i advanced it to about 12 with the vacume advance unpluged...before i changed the timing, the water temp would be about 190 or under going around town, but as soon as i got on the freeway...it would start crawling to 230ish...

I haven't been on the freeway yet with the timing change.....

The question is, could that be the overheating cause?

ummmm, YES. any time the timing is retarded from stock you run the risk of overheating

the question is, with it that much retarded, im assuming you noticed a big performance gain after advancing it... i thought too far advanced cause overheating, not retarded?

both can cause overheating. too far advanced can cause backfiring out the carb a hot condition and dificult starting. a timing too retarded can also cause overheating and poor performance.
