timing

Im timing my mustang, i was wondering with my mods if it would be bennificial to advance or retard the timing? set up as follows
302 around 11:1 compression
hi-po 289 heads ported and polished
edelbrock rpm air gap intake manifold
comp cams magnum cam, 528 lift 230 durration at .050 inch timing
holley 650 double pumper
long tube heddman torque step headers
msd 6a ignition and blaster II coil

With your compression, its likely that you won't be able to advance your timing very much without some detonation. Shoot for as much intial as you can without excessive pinging, then get your total advance to 34 or 36 degrees, all in by 2800 or so rpm. Pretty much standard practice for a mild build with factory head castings.

you could also use the adjustment in your vacuum advance that could help you set your total timming.

I agree, but you will need to keep your intial timing a low as possible (maybe 10 degrees) with that high of compression ratio otherwise you will blow a head gasket or worse if detonation occurs.
