I'm about to install (if needed) new power steering hoses for my 1967 mustang coupe 289 V8 tomorrow. I have talked extensively to one of the members about changing the seats or getting them machined since these seem to be the key for leaks. Does anyone have any tips for a better seal or something they did for a better seal? Did nidividuals have to replace their seats for a better seal? Or does it even matter that I'm putting new hoses with new flares make a diffrence? I just don't want to waste my time replacing the hoses and find another leak! Last but not least has anyone seen a heat shield or created a shield protecting the pressure hose and return hose from the headers? PLEASE help I don't care if you think your opinion isn't helpful IT IS! I'm new to muscle cars and want to get everyones opinion. Thanks

There's not much more you can do.... If it helps, these are the same fittings that are used for brake lines, so any tricks for brakes should also work for power steering hoses.

About the only tip I have is to not let the hose twist as you tighen down the nut. This can cause cuts in the seat. That and don't overtighten. They should be nice and tight, but not super-tight.

Personally, I'd try the new hoses 1st, then worry about the seats later if you still have leaks. Changing the hoses isn't all that hard. Shouldn't take you more than 2hrs max. Changing the seats is a much larger job.

I can't speak to the seats, but I had problems with with the headers on my 67 289 and the way the hoses were originally routed. Mine went over past the shock tower then down past and against the header.

Tried to twist tie the hoses out of the way of the header, but it eventually made enough contact to burn through the pressure hose (oh, a big mess).

I ended up getting a custom hose made ($40) and rerouted the hoses straight down off the PS reservoir and in front of the motor mount (instead of behind it); same thing for the return line. It's worked great thus far... Hope that helps...

When you state custom hose where did you get it made especially being a pressure hose? hmmm.... I took my return line and that was cracked right where it was closest to the headers. After replacing that another leak seemed to show up after filling up the resvoir and turning the wheel 4-6 times! It wasn't a large leak but it still leaked! So now I'm replacing all of the other hoses to be safe.

Well if your replacing the hose, it's off and the seats are in front of you.
They can usually be removed with an Awl or screw extractor
and you won't have to remove the hose again.

I install the new seats with the Awl to get it started into its hole,
then screw the nut in while holding the hose centered.
By finger tightening the nut down to snug it only takes about a half of a turn to a turn of torque with a wrench to seal.

No leaks....No drips..... No doing it all again. :nonono:

Where did you get your seats? I talked to one individual and he gets them specially made. Please help. Thanks
