Tips on removing aftermarket car alarm

I'm redoing the interior of my 90 GT. I pulled out all the interior to give it a good cleaning and lay down a new rug. The wiring for the aftermarket car alarm was wound thru all the console brackets so I unpluged it. Well I went to move the car and it wouldn't start. Actualy there is no power any where. I plugged the alarm back in thinking that was it. I still have the same problem. I'm thinking since I tried to start the car without the box plugged in it triggered something and no I'm screwed. At this point I just want to take the dang thing out. The wiring job is a mess under the das anyway.

Any ideas on what I need to do to get my power back? Its a python model 80 if that helps.

It will have an ignition or starter kill wire hooked up to it. You are just going to have to trace each wire and unhook it 1 at a time. The ignition kill will probably have the factory wire spliced and it will need to be reconnected.

It really is not that big a deal - just gotta spend a few mins hunting for the crank wire. I would pop the column cover off and look for a splice. Some installers also splice at the clutch safety switch and some do it at the starter solenoid itself. (I am assuming that you have a starter kill since you said it was dead when you cranked). There may be other safety devices, but if a shop installed the alarm I doubt it.

its more than a starter kill. It killed the power to the whole car. No dome light, no headlights nothing. Battery is good as put a charger to it thinking it was the problem at first. I did pull the colum cover off andmy gawd is there a boat load of wires for that thing.

You should find a huge honking relay to cut down that many circuits (and a ton of blocking diodes to separate the circuits). That is very strange. I would wonder where the alarm gets its power from if the thing kills the entire car (it would have to be hardwired to the battery). If you remove the wire and the starter/etc kill uses an actively wired relay, the car might start (some alarms have to supply ground to the relay in order for the starter kill to work; if you remove the power to the alarm, it cant send ground and the starter functions through the common and NC terminals).

If you are getting nothing then I would look to something else besides the alarm. It just might be a coincidence that something else is going on there.

I was suggesting doing something like JT is mentioning, but he might have explained it a little better than me.

here are the wires that you should need to disconnect:

12v - usually red or yellow
ignition - usually red or yellow or pink
accessory - probably orange, may not be present
ground - black
starter - probably purple, this is two wires cut them from the relay pack then solder these together as this is the loop for the starter kill
siren - usually black with red and black
power lock/unlock wires - if you have them, usually blue and green
led - usually red wire, may just unplug from alarm brain
shock sensor - probably will just unplug from brain
transmitter antenna - probably will just unplug from brain

Ok I got it started by finding the starter kill. It doesn't sound like its running right. Could there be something else that needs to be "unlooped"?. Motor sounds like the timing has all been pulled out or something. I want to get it running so I can get it to the body shop to get the floor fixed. Then I'll take it to the car assecory place to have them take the rest of this PITA out.

Usually when you get the starter kill hooked back up that should be it. There might be something going on with you car not running right.

This should help you. Pay particular attention to the white/pink wire, that is the wire that was spliced on my alarm. This wire you'll probably have to solder back together for a proper fix. Also, if you have any wires that are connected to other wires (probably to trigger lights, horn) they are most likely tied into the circuit in parallel, so you can just cut those wires, shouldn't have to worry about reconnecting anything.

I got it. Thanks guys. I think it was just running really rich from all my failed attempts to get it started. After letting it sit and firing it back up all is well.

And the Snake is GONE!

Nice work. I agree with Kevin - running issues are likely unrelated (unless you find ignition kill switches, etc, which have too much resistance in them).

unplug the alarm control box they but uner your dash and shoot it then look for the spliced wire
