Tire Blow out....sorta I guess

Hi

any one know what would cause a 5 year old tire with 1000 miles on a show car to suddenly break the bead at 20 MPH. It was inflated to 32 PSI.

The bead wasent blown out or torn up it just appeared to have come off the the bead but it stayed inside the rim

Tire was a Eagle GT 195/60/14 on a stock 14x7 ford rim.

The bead broke I heard whoos woosh woosh and it was flat as a pancake.
I took it to goodyear and got soaked into buying another 4 b/c he said it "MAY" have become brilttle and dry from age.

Heck I had tires way longer then that and they werent brittle. These had no cracks any where on them either

He tried to sellme rims as he said they can be bent. I havent hit anything and never had the prob b4 this. The rims have some slight wave to them after 40 years or use but arent all too bad or bent up in my opionion to casue this.

any ideas.

After about 4 years, most tires enter into the questionable area no matter how they look. It has to do with the crap in the air and sun light causing things to break down plus just being parked with weight on them. A good shop would have maybe worked with you and not tried to soak you for all the things you do not need. I sold tires for a while and it was hard for me not to warranty tires that were over the age date based on the side wall info. Got in trouble with the boss on a few occasions.

thats for the encouregement

just curious how bad would a rim have to be in order for a tire to bust a bead

I never liked the 195's any how on a stang
at least I have bigger tires now. went with 225/60/14 TA's
the car look tough again

A bit of a wobble in a rim like you describe would not cause a bead problem. All it would do is create a wobble effect in the wheel if on the front or a slight vibration if on the rear.

I have seen rims with the lip curled over and the entire side of the bead showing and it still held air.
