ok I give up. anyone here have any good tips on how to avoid getting tire gel all over your car as soon as you drive it right after you apply it?? i tried buffing it with a towel after I apply it hoping i'd get the excess off but no luck. i'm using armor all extreme tire shine gel... maybe someone makes something that actually rubs into the tire better instead of just flying off as soon as you drive away? what are you guys using?

I use a spray, I believe it's Tire Wet. And I put it on with a microfiber towel, as to not leave excess, and keep it off my wheels. Seems to work for me.

I just picked up the Black Magic Tire Wet Express. It's pretty slick. You can control how much you put on by how hard you squeeze. It's also really easy to do lower profile tires with it.

Nothing flinging onto my paint.

The detail guys at my shop use a bottle of dark blue gel that smells really good. I've had years of the canned or bottled stuff from the stores and this one outdoes all of them. No splatter on my car and the shine has literally been on my tires for two weeks (even driving through puddles). Its the best stuff I've used and I have no idea what it is.

maguires has a gel thats like that. i think its the NXT generation one. it looks good and lasts a long time, but it turns your tires brown if you dont reapply. it takes forever to gt the tires to clear up as well, even with lots of scrubbing.

I use a Meguires product or Vinylex. I spray it onto a sponge and then wipe it onto the tire giving it a few passes. I can't imagine how a gel is supposed to be absorbed but whatevers.

The absolute best way to do it for no slinging of product afterwards is to go out and buy some of those cheap walmart car wash sponges. You know the crappy looking yellow ones that look like something you would use back in 85'? Then take a razor blade and cut it into three to four sections. Then spray some Tire Wet on the sponge and a fair amount at that. Then wipe the product on to the tire while holding up a round cardboard circle that fits the size of your rim so that no excess gets on your rims because you weren't paying enough attention to your motion with the sponge. Usually because some unbelievably gorgeous blonde just commentted on your ride. You will not have any runs or excess product lingering around on the rims and also gets rid of those crazy marks in your driveway. Throw the sponge section out when you are done and use the next one next time. Also, this will save a ton of product for you and keep those crazy little marks off the car from the overspray. Have fun, and look good!

I’ve used many different products over the years to keep tires looking good and clean… foams, gels, sprays… and different ways to apply. I’ve come to prefer the meguires spray over the others and like DarkFire has mentioned the best way I’ve come across as well is to use an old microfiber rag. Fold it over and double it up then spray the tire cleaner on the rag and apply this way. It doesn’t take much one thin coat will do the job. The microfiber rag will absorb the cleaner and apply a nice smooth coat to the tire… easy this way to keep it off the rims.

Or use a spray and apply it directly to the tire before washing your car… hit the tires one good time with some water pressure and continue to wash the entire car.

I ran out of spray cleaner and applied mothers back to black yesterday with a microfiber rag… looks good but I don't expect it to last.

I also use the Armor All Tire Gel. I have never had an issue with it getting on my car after applying it. I have been using it since week 1 with my car and that has been 11 months now(still using the same bottle-avg 3-4 applications/month).

I personally hate the shiny look on tires and leather. Looks tacky in my opinion. But to each their own. If you want your tired just looking clean and new but not shiny, just use a spray or foam tire shine a few hours before you wash your car. Right before your done washing, take the rag with the soap on it and go over the tires a few times. This will leave the tires not shiny...but extremly black and new looking.

Tire Dressing

I use a product called "More Shine - Less Time for Tires" by Stoner. It sprays on, never had a problem with it getting on the paint. I just let it sit for an hour or so after applying.

I'm with LuckyH as far as the shiny shine goes. I've been using Armorall (the original spray protectant, not a gel) since waaay back there. Spray it on at night before you go to bed, wipe off the wheels, let the tires dry naturally. In the morning, they'll look natural and dark, and actually be protected. Lasts quite a long time, too.

I also agree with LuckyH. That is one thing I like about the Armor All Tire Gel, it lasts through several washes and still has a decent shine to it. I use Wesley's Bleach White on mine with a stiff bristled brush to clean them. I only really need to apply the gel perhaps after every 3rd or 4th wash. Here are 2 pics of mine from winter driving, getting scrubbed really well then just dried off with a rag.

Stoners brand with a sponge applicator. Spray it on the sponge then rub it on your tires and let it dry for a few minutes in the sun. No mess.

I use the left over bacon grease from breakfast, it leaves a real slick finish.

My neighbors are probably getting pissed off at me from hauling butt out of the neighborhood to get away from the dogs though.

Poorboys Bold N Bright is mainly what I use for tires. It dries to the touch and leaves a nice shine. It is also water based which is all that I use. Oil based tire dressing can cause the tires to brown and can actually dry them out and they won't last as long.

Where can you get Poorboys Bold n Bright? I haven't heard of the one. The petroleum based stuff turns the tires brown and I agree that it deteriorates the rubber.
