Tire width question

275/40/17 is about the widest you want to go on a stock 17x8.
A 285/40 or 295 width tire is probaly the widest you could reasonably go on a 17x9.

A 275 will fit on an 8" rim, however most usually recomment only 2" wider than the rim so that would limit you to a 255 on an 8" rim
That's the size Ford ran on the 1994-1995 Cobras...255/45/17
For a 9", if you follow the 2" rule the max should be a 275 tire.
Typically going wider allows more sidewall flex, and handling may actually suffer slightly due to the tire rolling over onto itself in hard turns

It also depends on the brand of tire. You can easily fit a Nitto 315/35/17 on a 9" rim since Nittos run kind of narrow but a BFG of the same size should be on at least a 10" rim.

I loved the look of the 275s on my old 8" wheels. They look good on the 9s now, but don't have that sweet roll off the lip like they used to. I suppose it doesn't matter that much now, since they are on the front.

I wouldn't go any wider than 255 on an 8" wheel and 275 on a 9".

I wonder how much side to side motion there is if you lean against the rear fender and give it a nudge 
OMG! 315 on an 8" wheel. I've never seen that, nor heard of it. That looks really bad. I'd be afraid it'd pop off.
yeah, it looks like if the tires are over inflated or heat up too much they WOULD pop right off. I think I'll give the 275's a try on my stock 8" rims.
IF you go 275 on an 8" wheel...I recommed only going with BFGoodrich, or Nitto. Goodyears are wider than those two brands. I know that for a fact, I've had all three brands on 8" wheels.

Thats why I moved them to the front and put Nittos in the back. Now my GSCs and 555 were the same size, both numericaly and side by side 
I have Michelin PS2s now and they are by far the best street tire I have ever used, and I have tried almost all of them. Kumho, Bridgestone Pole/S02/touring, Sumitomo HTR-I/II/III, P-Zero in several flavors, BFG T/A/KDs/KDWs, Nitto and Dunlops. I havent run Hoosiers.... I think thats the only ones Ive never tried
I can tell you that the PS2s grip phenominally (sp?) They hold the power, lateral grip is killer and in the wet they rock
I am only getting 8k out of them because I tend to drive the car hard in the corners and I often have the TC off 
But if you are more responsiable then you can get 20K out of them 
i wish i knew how bad they were before i bought them. I will never buy another goodyear tire.

Goodyears were so bad on my minivan, the dealer took them back and apologized. They wiggled like the sidewall was collapsing when I went around a corner. The best tire performance value I have seen is still the Toyo T1R's. On a safety note, the maximum I would put on the 17"x8" wheel is 255/45-17's. However, personally I wouldn't go above 245/45-17. That is the best size for that wheel. Anything else trades performance for looks. Above the 255 you are starting to sacrifice safety at higher speeds and side loads.
