tired 302/ 306 rebuild suggestions please.

My 92 Notch has 140,000 miles on it. I have all the parts for my top end and I was thinking about a new CHP short block for $1699 or should I just bore my origional block .30 over and just replace the internals? Has anyone done this and what internals should I replace. I heard a stock block is good for 350,000 miles. Thankyou for your help.

I had this done a week ago. Just picked it up but I havn't assembled it yet. I ordered sealed power forged pistons, along with all the bearings and rings. All together, everything came out to a total of 990.00 which isn't bad at all. Block was bored, and boiled and painted. I was going to order a DSS shortblock but i decided to put the xtra cash towards AFR heads.

I would replace the whole rotating assembly with forged stuff. I guess it really depends on how handy you are with building motors... How much power do you plan on putting through the stock block anyway?

140,000 doesnt mean its dead. 5.0s can go well past that. Is the current motor giving you problems? If not you can more than likely leave it alone.

Now if you do a rebuild and use a stock block I would keep the stock crank and rods and just get some forged pistons. Go .030 with it. Speed Pros are a good budget option. I put them in my motor.

Get new rod bolts (ARP) and your good to go. I think it cost me about 1000.00 to build mine like that. That price included the shop putting it together, the parts, machine work and gaskets.

Its nothing fancy (mine) but it makes 300 on motor and handles a wet 150 shot w/o issue.

I wont bash CHP, DSS or any other shop but I will say that I would rather build my engine close to home instead of having one shipped to me across country (didnt look to see where you live). If you have issues with the motor it can be a real hassle trying to sort it out.

I live in Torrance, Ca and CHP is 10 minutes from my house. The LX was a cop car and has a blown head gasket. It has a Vortech S trim and TFS heads and a Saleen intake, 80 mm MASS Air, Romac balancer, 1.7 RR looking at about 400 HP. I would feel better off to buy a new SB for some reason. It has a blown head gasket right now and when I go to start it up it goes click, click,click. Does it need a new alternator or a new starter? Thanks

I am not handy at all with motors. I am looking for a mechanic that I could pay good money to put it all together in my garage.

Check the battery first. Then move to the starter.
