Yup, I can put both in my car for the same price.

Which one shifts smoother?

and how bad is a .82 OD (I would be getting that for my OD if i were to go with the TKO 600)

your stock OD is about .62
you would have terrible gas milage with the TKO 600 it shifts very hard and is noisey.

the T56 shifts very smoothe the OD is about what you have now (unless it is a viper spec) it is a great street trans

the tko 600 will hold more power than the cobra version of the T56. if it were mine i would upgrade the input shaft of the T56 from a 10 spline to a 26 spline. the input shaft is one of the weaker parts of the T56

in short the T56 will be the better tranny. i love my viper spec!

My friend went with a TKO 600. His Cobra is actually a little slower and chunkier shifting than when he had the stock T45. Also, for the TKO600, he had to buy another crossmember, and the exhaust is still rubbing. It is a big case, and weighs a crap ton. I think the TKO 600 gearing is better matched for a boosted track car. If you race, go with the TKO. For the street and some track, get a T56.

the t56 is really heavy. alot heavier then the 600. shifting to third in the t-56 is a pain when racing. also why dont you get the other 600 with the .68 overdrive. the .82 is for road racing. i have never missed a shift in my 600 and i love it. how also did you get the same price for the two. the t-56 is alot more expensive and you gotta change out more things then the 600 i.e. drive shaft, crossmember

He said he was trying to do it LOL. But running 17PSI through a stock motor is an absolute death warrent....especially since he didnt add any fuel but retarded the timing a TON...he upped it from around 8PSI. So im sure it was crazy lean....Im honestly suprised it held up for a few dyno pulls.

BTW, RB....get the T-56 and swap the input shaft. It will handle about the same amount as the TKO and will be much more streetable.

With my MGW shifter, shifting to 3rd is a cinch for me.

So how notchy is the t56 when shifting? I was running a pretty nice tr 3650 but even then shifting was a click, click operation. You would feel pressure on the syncro's, then half a second later it would go into gear. By the time im in gear, turbo has spooled down.

I quess what I am asking is which tranny will shift faster/better

T56 will definately shift faster there is no waiting for the syncros. it is NOT hard to get into 3rd either. 5th is the only one you need to take your time with. even with the pro 5.0 on mine it shifts better than my 3650 with the MGW. i cant wait to get a MGW on this one and see how she does.

the T56 is known as a great shifting trans, where the tko 600 is known as a tough race tranny with loud hard shifts.

i'm with hotmostang, get the input shaft upgraded and you will hold just as much power with the T56 and have a great shifting trans for the street.

T56 it is.

Can someone clear up the drive shaft issue please? I have seen that d&d performance sells drive shafts for the T56 swap because they need to be about an inch shorter due to the longer tranny. However, I have had another local shop (who has done this swap many times) saying that sometimes a stock length DS is to short, and sometimes it's too long...

Any thoughts?

you need a 1" shorter driveshaft. the stocker is too long, no way around it. the trans is longer so the driveshaft must be shorter.

i would not use that shop if they cant get their facts right. how can some be too short and some be too .long, that just doesnt make any sense

I had a TKO600 in my old GT and it was very nice. However, with a Steeda Tri-Ax, it was NOISY! The MGW shifter helped a lot though. First mod I did to it after getting it back.

The 600 IS heavier than the T56, and unless you do a LOT of roadtrips, you won't be using the 6th gear that much.

I say TKO with MGW shifter.

Here's a movie of my 600: right click, save as.

I had T56's in both my Z28's and they were ok, if that counts for anything... I think the T-5's in my previous 4 stangs felt smoother and more stout, even though I know they weren't haha. I don't see the justification for the extra cost of the T56 though. I don't know how the T56's for the Fords are geared, but the ones in the GM F-body with a 4.10 rearend were near equal to a T-5 with 3.73's. I'm keeping the stock rear gear ratio and going with the TKO 600 (.64). I'm going to be around 600 RWHP on 15 lbs of boost. I think the $2K 600 "street" will perform just fine compared to the extra $1400 for the T56.

Anyone know how much heavier the TKO 600 is compared to the GT's factory Tr 3650?

the TKO600 is around 115lbs by itself without a bellhousing. Mine shifted like butter except for 3rd when I first got it.. sent back to D&D for some R&R on it and just got the car back driving so will find out how good 3rd is pretty soon. gotta say at low speed it feels better overall than it did new. now its wait and see how it likes me at 6500 powershifting!

tko 600 with the .68 OD

the t56 has a 2.95 first gear and your 3650 has a 3.31 (tko will have a 3.31 also) 1st which is better gearing.
