do tob use ball bearings???

took the trans off along with the fly wheel and found a few ball bearings on the back of the block in some thick grease.

im thinking that there for a tob, when i replaced the trans with a 100% brand new one, when i took the old one out you could totally tell it was from a junk yard, so im thinking that who ever had the car before me when they but the junk yard trans in...key word junk......that they exploded the tob, because thats the only thing i can think of with bearings that big.

what do you think??? thanks

I think that they do contain ball bearings. I really cant see the need for needle bearings in a TOB...although maybe they should consider that. I just cant seem to keep a TOB in my trans for more than 5k miles without it squealing like hell. I've packed them tight with grease and still no luck. I think the next one will be an OEM ford piece.

My plastic Timken one from autozone has kept quiet for a good 18k so far....Knock on wood

If you found a bearing in the back of the block I would think it was the pilot bearing. A good quality aftermarket or ford part will do just fine for either the tob or piilot.

Even if its not from the pilot bearing, u should replace it anyway with the rear seal for some added insurance.

The pilots are needle bearings or just a bushing. I've never cracked a TO bearing open before but would assume they ran on ball bearings from looking at them.

Yes, they use a longer bearing, was thinking maybe they were describing it wrong. the tob will use a ball bearing. Just not sure how one of those would get into the back of the block w/o totally destroying an input shaft and someone missing it before.
