Hi, fellow stangers! I've been wondering something for awhile... I have a 98 Cobra with 120,000 miles on it and it's all stock. Just the K&N filter and flowmasters. Runs really good, might use a half a quart of oil in 3000 miles, got the occasional tick from the passenger side head when the engine's warmed up. So my question is: would installing a supercharger be risky with this many miles on the car? I've been looking at a few of the 03-04 Cobras that I really like.. found a couple nice ones for 24 to 27 thousand. Think it'd be worth my while to suffer with a high payment for a car with less mileage and more power?
Just curious as to what you guys think on this issue! Another thing kinda off topic is that I've been getting a sulfuric smell when I dig into it. It's gotten way better since I switched gas stations. Is there any for sure way to test the converters besides the sniff test?
Hit me back up! Thanx...

1 - Run a compression/leakdown test to get a better idea about the "health" of your engine prior to deciding on supercharging it or stepping up to an 03/04.

2 - The sulfuric smell might very well be the cats. It might be time to buy new O2 sensors if they are still factory with that much mileage and/or switch to an aftermarket midpipe...

I'm in the same boat as you. 112,000 miles and runs great. Had a Mustang performance shop (Extreme Automotive) say that these engines are pretty reliable and are ok for supercharging at these miles.
Compression test is a good idea though.

"Should" be no problems if the engine is in good shape. If there is a problem a supercharger install will bring it to light. I put a supercharge on my 94 at 125k miles & now have 131k, no problem at all.

Ah, yeah, I prob should replace those O2 sensors... the smell seems to have gone away after running it on a different fuel. So if a Mustang shop gives the green light and one of you supercharged yours at 125, then I prob won't have any trouble! Cool. I'm curious as to what brand and set up of supercharger works well with these engines. I've heard good things about Vortech and Paxton. What are you guys using? Thanx for the feedback, by the way!

like someone else said, compression check. You will probably be fine, but in the long run id start looking at either a rebuild or a forged longblock.

I say decide if you want to keep the car or get the 03/04. Part of the decision can be based on a true leak down compression test. If the motor is getting bad, might be time to sell it and step up to the 03/04.
