Too Much Power

is it possible? lol Ok anyways heres the question i have for you guys. Im a 17 year old whos been driving around in a v-6 mustang. My uncle told me about an 86 mustang gt 5sp for sale. Nice interior nice extrerior, clean no accident. One thing is making me unsure. It runs 12 low-mid 12s....
Keep in mind this would be my daily driver. Im very unsure because of the power jump... 150.. to double or over... Do you think this car would be to much for me to handle? I never do any stupid stuff on the streets, i only accelerate hard with a burnout if needed. But fish tailing n stuff is done only in a parking lot where there is nothing to hit. But anyways what do u guys think? To much power for a 17 year old whos never driven a stick? He only wants 3000 for the car so its pretty hard to pass up. I just wanted an opinion

Go for it, i'm 17 too, just take it easy (HUGE jump over v6-from expierence) it's a hell of a deal too.

Well, it just depends. Do you think you have the responsiblity to handle a performance car? Just because you say you wont drive fast doesnt mean you wont, there will probably be a time you'll drag race on the street and hopfully you wont crash and kill someone or yourself, remember thats a big thing to think about and to live for the rest of your life if something goes wrong. Also how do your parents feel about it and more than likely your insurance is going to go up. Not trying to scare you or drive you away from getting a fast car trust me i felt the same way when i was 17. Just remember driving is like handling a loaded weapon it only takes a split second for something to go wrong. So think about it real hard, if your not rdy to drive a hi-po car with a 5spd maybe you should wait.

I don't think going from v-6 to a hotrod is a very good idea. If I were you I'd locate a stock 5.0 and go from there.

Then you will grow with the car as you bolt on HP.

just go for it, gotta learn the power sometime. i went from a 50 hp volkswagen beetle to a 90GT thats a huge jump in power.

Ive already found a stock 5.0 with a 5sp. My dad just wants to look at this one because they only want 1000 dollars more with all the extras thats done to it. Id actually be a little uneasy about getting in that 86 and driving it lol

yea going to a 5.0 is a huge change. Im 17 now but before i got my stang i was driving an 89 accord... big difference. i dont think it will be "too much power". just start off slow and learn how the car drives then speed it up a lil. whatever way u go, u will like the 5.0 speed more than the V6!

its true, you plan on driving the car normally, but that long open road will be calling your name. i had my speedo pegged tonight, i just couldnt resist. im 16, the mustang wasnt my first car, but i gave my other car to my brother before i got my license soo i never really drove it... but i dont really speed except when theres a huge temptation to do it on that long open road. just remember, that 100+ mph braking sucks! haha get the car, youll be fine, but as already mention, that cars going to be a bitch in the rain soo get used to the car in the rain before you actually get stuck in the rain and spin out or some ****.

Go for it, it's too good to pass up. Unless your dad is a clueless dick, then he wouldn't want to look at it if he did't think you could handle it. If he knows his S#*+, then go see it and have HIM drive it, not you. I can say from experience, shopping for a hot rod with my dad was a fantastic experience, great bonding opportunity, and I learned a lot that way since he was buiding them all through the 60's and 70's. He also steered me away from some that woulda took all my money and left me out dry somewhere. The main thing to think about if you're concerned about managing the power is suspension. If you're worried, spend a little extra on tires right off, get the stickiest all-weather meats you can. Worst case, pull out the drag stuff and spend some money on a good autoX suspension, and driving in the rain will never be a problem again. (not to mention, going around corners is fun when you can do it fast... something dedicated drag cars are not set up to do) I drive my GT everyday of the year, sun, rain, and snow with no problems, because I spent more on the suspension than any other part of the car. They don't have to be tail happy bombers, it's all in how you build it. Good luck!

Just get it and be carefull with it. It's only a double edge sword if you act crazy with it.

What I'd think about is whether you can afford the insurance and gas - if it's a daily driver. A naturally aspirated 12 second car, especially if it's carbed, is gonna be a real wake up call on your gas bill compared to your V-6. The other thing is, if the price seems to good to be true - it usually is. Check the car over REAL carefully - in my mind something's not right about an extremely clean 86 that runs 12's for $3000.

Yeah-go for it!!!! That is a great deal. Like Michael Yount said, be sure to check the car over real good. Get underneath, look for any leaks in trans or oil pan. I would put a magnet to the fenders and check for bondo. If everything turns out ok, you would be crazy to not buy it. It may be faster, but your plenty capable of getting used to it.

My first car had 97 hp in the engine and i went to a 5.0...not a 12 sec. car by any means but still. i don't think it will be too much for you to handle as long as you're conciously thinking about how you're driving. like was said before be extra careful in the rain. but i say GO FOR IT. i would in a heartbeat if i could drive a stick

It my uncles friends, and my uncle built the rear end and the engine for the guy so he knows just about everything about the car. It is fuel injected. Were hoping to go look at it today if the guy is free

im 17 and my LT1 has a lil bit of power ...ive gotten used to driving in the rain, it sucks...im kinda scarred about what winter will bring, as is my car gets sideways when someone spits on the street

if you really want a mustang its usually best to buy one thats bonestock and very clean. theres a ton of them out there. besides its funner to build one than buy one. trust me ive been through 4 5.0's now. and my newest lx is the best one so far because it was all original when I got it.

you can never have too much power i went from a I-6 69 mustang to a 5.0 5speed pretty stock w/gears & exhaust

Mustangs certainly turn into a video game when it rains out. Trouble is, you only get one guy. The deal sounds too sweet to pass up. If you buy it and "Love" the car then you should be fine. If it came to easy and you didn't appreciate it near as much as you should have then you'll wrap it around a tree and we all (those of us that said "Yeah! Go get it".) will have been wrong. I hope that you're not the latter.
