Well I got bored today and since I cannot find anyone in town that rents an engine hoist I went ahead and took the intake and head off just so I could feel like I was acomplishing something on the car.

Looks like the engine has possibly seen a bit of detonation on 1 cyl. Looks as if gravel got in there and scuffed the head and piston up. Cyl wall looks fine though. I have never seen the results of detonation, so let me what you think. Everything else appears to be fine. BTW the engine was last rebuilt in the mid 80's according to previous owner.

Looks like detonation to me too. I can't believe you can't find a hoist to rent. You don't have a stout rafter or swing set to hang a chain hoist to?

buy a engine hoist they are $180 or less at harbor freight. I bought a higher quality one from costco for $270. Probably the best investment I have made. since I have yanked 3 motors and have recieved two cases of beer from loaning it to buddies.

I really can't, I have literly called every rental place in Auburn and nobody rents them. I have only been living here for about 8 months now so don't know any other car guys in the area to borrow one from. I have access to one on the other side of the state, but will be a month before I can get over there to get it. Not going to buy one due to no place to keep it. My small garage is already full as it is. If I could talk my wife into letting me put the pool table in the dinning room I would have plenty of free room in the garage.

And allcarfan, I wish I could spend the money on your setup. my motor build up wont take place for at least another year. BTW I will be in your neck of the woods next week on business.
