About three weeks ago I bought my first Mustang , 02 Gt. Yesterday after the car was warmed up I popped the hood to check the trans fluid and heard a slight-faint knocking noise from the top valve cover. Doesn't sound like a rod knock or any thing,it sounds like it's coming from the right side valve cover area, I have checked for a exhaust leak and there is no leak just wondering what else it could be? Oil pressure is good, the motor runs strong. Oil is fresh, Motorcraft 5-20, I bought the car from a guy that was older, mid sixtys and only has 37000 miles on the car all stock.

Thanks in advance
Ram

Could possibly be one of the following:

1. exhaust leak
2. lifter tick
3. spark plug blow out
4. annoying injectors

Possibilty

Exhaust I checked
Lifters Didn't think the 4.6 had them?
Sparkplugs I changed them but no performace loss, installed factory and torqued them to 13fps. I hope it's not that!!!
Injectors I can deal with

Anyone else with ideas please

Thanks Ram

Possible

I run 93 octane, I took it into Ford today it has powertrain left on it. The engine guy said a possible valve hanging up or wrist pin . I'm always a little cautious about having my car at the dealership because it's just another car to them. Nobody treats your stuff like you do.

I hope it's the wrist pin then it's new motor time possibly

I'll keep you up to date

There's also a TSB for those Romeo engines with a ticking noise, worn valve guides that make them tick.

Update

Well the dealship called today and asked to do surgery on my car, they believe it's a stuck valve. Has anyone here had such luck? I hope that this not a typical thing for the 4.6

i wanna know how you get a stuck valve... youd either destroy the cam or the piston.

???

Hmmm Thanks. I will ask to see the bad parts. I bought this car three weeks ago and it had a powertrain warrenty only so my nerves are shot wondering what is wrong and if the dealer is going to try to screw me , I'm only concerned because I used to work for a dealer and of course the finacial aspect of things.

Thanks for the support

FINAL REPORT

I got a final set in stone reply from Ford, they claim a sticky valve on cylider #4 intake side and a worn valve guide. They also have to get a Ford rep to agree with the dealer diagnosis to move forward with the repair, they also informed me that the right cylinder head assembly will need to be replaced. Is there a Tsb out for this?

Has anyone had a similar problem with there 4.6???

I don't know about a stuck valve.. Did you notice a loss of performance?? Sometimes though, the HLA's (OHC's don't have lifters) get gummed up, and you get a little bit of lash, but usually not a stuck valve..

Also, normally if a valve guide is wearing out, you wouldn't need to replace the entire head assy. I think by law, you can ask to see the parts and have a second opinion before they work on the car.

IDK..
