tore up my water pump pulley

Heading home from the local cruise-in, I opened up the 69/302 on a nice lonely stretch of road., The C4 caught 2nd with a nice chirp and about 5 seconds later, I heard a loud metallic sound under the hood and immediately shut it off.

It was my cheapo stamped steel chrome plated underdrive pulley. The center section was completely torn out and the bent pulley was just hanging around the water pump shaft. I guess without a stock fan. even though I used washers, there just wasn't enough strength.

Fortunately, no other damage, but I will go back to a heavy gauge stock pulley.

I have done this twice on the Shelby. Some of the early pulleys were simple onle layer stampings and others had another thicker "cup" spot welded on the front to add strength. Once I got one of the armored pulleys I stopped breaking them.
