I aplogize that this isnt the right forum for this but here goes...

A close freind of mines neighboor recently passed away. He has what we think is either a 69 or 70 Torino Cobra or Taladega sitting in his backyard. At worst it could just be a plain old Torino fastback. The car has been sitting for over 20 years so it is pretty sad with trees & brush growing over the front end. It does have the shaker hood, 429 (i think), 4 speed & Cobra badging on the side, but it only has a bench seat & doesnt have a rear honeycomb panel. Basically he left it to his family to sell the car & other crap & divide the money up. I am trying to help his son find out if this is a real Torino Cobra or perhaps Taladega. Some guys came & looked @ it & told him that it was just a Torino with stickers on it....BTW, the car looks to be pretty complete & solid other than the dent on the rear left quarter. This could be a badass car 1 day....

If anyone knows where or how I can decode this vin # to find out the real deal about the car, & if anyone is interested it will be for sale as soon as he figures out what it really is....

Anyway here is the vin he gave me (dont know if its correct)

# 0R38J134901

& here are the only crappy pics I have. If u look closely u can see the faded shaker popping out from the hood...

It's a 70 429CJ, not a Talledega, but still valuable. The guys hwo said it was "just a Torino with stickers on it" were probably hoping to steal it. The value still depends on options, how complete it is and the condition. Let us know how much he wants for it when he puts it up for sale.

Thanks...Its pretty much all there from what i can see. It needs a repair at the rear quarter panel, probably needs a new quarter. Doesnt look to be rusty. Hasnt been fired up in about 20 years though. Whats the typical ballpark value for a car of this condition?

I'm no expert on the values, but we still need more info on the options it has. Is it auto or four speed? CJ or SCJ? Rear gear ratio? Some pictures would help to determine if it still has the 429 CJ motor in it. You don't want to offer it as all-original if it doesn't have the original motor in it.

a good body shop can pull that 1/4 out, it may look ugly but i don't think it's all that bad, i've seen worse pulled out with no need for a new 1/4. it all depends on how bad the creases are.

Cobras of that time were like the other guy's SS cars...
Stripped...
Very few bells and whistles.

Eggcrate grille, blackout tail panel with cheap lights, bench seat, ect... These things are what you find on the Cobras.

It was like that back then.
Nowadays, labels like Cobra and SS mean high end stuff, not stripped.
Marketing gone stupid.

The most valueable thing about this Torino is the engine.
If it has the original, and it is not toast from sitting (or wasn't parked because it was toast), then someone will want the car.
Otherwise, it is just a parts car.

Good luck
Dave

ummm, i believe the Torino Cobra is one of the most valuable of the Torino's nowadays, because it was the performance version and because it was a stripper car. i'd take that car in a heartbeat!!!!!!!!!

actually i wouldn't mind having the (65 or 66?) truck behind it either if it's a shortbed.

I take it you misunderstood.
I wasn't saying the car wasn't valuable.
I does however depend greatly on the engine.

I was more or less responding to the folks that felt like it should have bucket seats, folding lights, honeycomb tail lights, etc...
Kinda pointing out that back then, bells and whistles weren't the reason for the Cobra name.

Yes, Cobras are comparable to SS cars of the time in every way.
They are valueable and usually stripped.

I apologize if anyone thought I was devaluing the car...
