So when you torque down the lower intake does it kinda feel like you turn the thing 3 times and it stays at like 20 or so, the chilton says 23-25? it kinda feels like I'm gonna strip out the threads or something? I don't know, someone, anyone let me know

i've always had issues using certain kinds of torque wrenches on those bolts too.......best to use a scale type than the click type.......honestly i worry about the sequence more than the torque........i snug them all down, then go around in the right order again.........a little snugger...i dunno i must know about where that breaking point is......the two most sensitive points on 302's are them damn manifold bolts and the water pump bolts...

ummmmmmmm, ok, your bolt broke.......what broke?? the head, or what?? still have a stud sticking in the hole?? intake manifolds because of allthe coolant flow kinda need all the bolts.......plus.......you dont wanna get it all back together and have a problem.......not to mention......it'll bug the hell outa you... if your lucky, you can pop it back off, remove the broken bolt, and go for it again..........might wanna buy new gaskets too..maybe buy a new intake manifold bolt kit.........don't give up.......you'll get it eventually......just try not to freak.....although i know it's hard....

yeah, it broke on the shaft itself, really sucks, hate to pull it all apart to put it together again, hopefully the damn sealer hasn't totally cured. Oh well, wish me luck

you do know the max torque needed for the lower intake bolts is 18foot pounds!! Over torque can cause the heads to actually be lifted off their seat and cause head gasket issues. You SHOULD get another bolt and make sure to use the CORRECT torque pattern required for proper seating.

using the correct torque pattern, just didn't like the 23 to 25 that the chilton book suggested. When I go and get another gasket set I'll just tighten them down to 18 then if that is what you suggest, i mean it felt more than tight when i torqued to about 16

I go 22 ft/lbs on the lower as recommended by my trickflow instructions. I go 22 ft/lbs on mine and all my friends car I work on. I use oil on the threads also.

You gotta start at a lower tq #, then work your way up. Go like 10, 15, 22 or something like that. Then once you get to the 22 spec, you keep going around ALL bolts until the wrench just clicks.

If you snapped the bolt you either did something wrong, over torqued it somehow or there was dirt in the threads.

I can't remember all the times I have busted a bolt on my ride. Intake manifold, water pump, oil pan, tb, etc. I think I may have even busted an alt or p/s bracket bolt once?

If you can't get vice grips on it then try to tap it out using a hammer and fine point punch. Work the punch on a high spot of the fractured surface. Sometimes this will work if the threads are not jammed up or bottomed out.
If it doesn't work then get a set of EZ outs as suggested by the Dman.

I scrapped the stock bolt setup a while back and installed studs in the heads. Very nice:nice:

Try to think more about how nice the finished product is going to be, rather than how messed up things are right now.

Good Luck

Every stang motor ive put together, which is quite a few, I tightened the lower intake to 25ft lbs (I even did my friends Alumnum AFR's to about 23 and it was fine.....in a bout 3-4 steps....first i would them all handtight, then i would go to 10, then 15, then 20-25 etc....dont be surprised though each step might take at least 5 cycles of tightening of all the bolts as when u tighten one another one gets looser...it takes a long time but its worth it. Sounds like u pretty much tightened them all to 25ftlb all at once? Dont worry about it, you live and learn, youll know next time. Ive torn my motor down THREE times in one week all the way down to the head gaskets each time, all in 90 degree weather, by myself, but damn now I know every little screw and bolt size  ....first time because i put the one head gasket the FRONT in the REAR, and stuff like that. Worst comes to worst, u got to take the head off, but im sure u can get it as is or with taking the lower off....Just think about hearing it start and driving it :nice:
