torque box kit

looking at doing my torque boxes when i go to do my subframe connectors. any thoughts on this kit from ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/79-0...r_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item1c134edbd2

as compared to this kit that looks similar offered by summit UMI Performance 1002 - UMI Performance Control Arm Torque Box Reinforcements - Overview - SummitRacing.com

the one off of ebay is powdercoated and a good deal cheaper, thoughts?

also, replace the control arms while installing the torque box kit?

go for the ebay one why pay more its all the same thing as long as fitment it right if there the same grade of metal then definitly go with the cheaper one but other wise go with the stonger one

I'd replace the control arms while doing the torque boxes. Might as well save yourself some work and do it all at once, versus having to unbolt all that again later and fiddle with trying to get things to line up to put the bolt back through the control arm holes again.

Ya know, I bought a set of UMI upper and lowers and the uppers fit nice, but for some reason I couldn't make the lowers fit correctly. I got the holes lined up and stuff, but when it came to putting the control arm bolt back in, after tightening the 4 vertical bolts the hole did not line up. Now if I put the control arm bolt in first and then tightened up the vertical bolts it just put way too much stress on the control arm bolt for my liking. So, I'm running without them and I'm just going to get the boxes welded. Maybe there's something I'm missing. I mean the UMI pieces look nice and look like they were done right. Who knows.

thanks for the advice i think i will be going with the ebay kit to save some money, it is also powder coated instead of bare metal finish. thanks for the advice.

I had them do some suspension work on my car and they built some nasty subframe connectors for me too...

ive been dying to go back there and just give him my car and say:
"chassis please" ha

Kind of a waste of money, that thing is so much work to install, and the car is only going to be as strong as what the S-box is bolted to, which is just thin sheetmetal. That thing is good if your original uppers are FUBARed

umm.....no?

It's not just bolted to sheet metal (unless you noob-ly installed it). It's bolted and welded into place to the rear frame rails; in addition to almost every sheet metal piece around the rear of the car.

Replaces the sheet metal factory crossmember between the upper control arms with 1/4" steel and 1/8" steel.

Yes, it is a PITA to install, but it's also a bullet-proof upper control arm mounting point.

Still a waste of money, way overkill, if you completely weld the uppers before they break there is no need for that thing. Plenty of guys are in the 8's on the stock uppers

im just wondering so if you have like a ten second car do you need to even worry about the uppers? I got a vert and could not install them so I just did the lowers

I tore my drivers rear upper on a 11 second pass, depends how much power you make, how the car is driven, what tires you use on the street, etc etc, there is not really an answer for what power level will tear up the boxes, i think automatics are way easier on them than a stick car though

think just welding the sides of the mounts to the chassis will make a big difference
