i was playing around on ebay and noticed a kit to make the torque box upper and lower on the rear stronger.. any body have any experience with one of these kits? and at what point do you really need to beef it up?
 
I think they're always a worthwhile investment to make, personally. Years of abuse on a stock Mustang can tear them due to metal fatigue, but if you have any plans on running some slicks they're definitely worth the upgrade. It's not so much any certain power level that you need to do some strengthening, but when you're really planting the power.
 
it looks like something that i can fab up myself.. i am about to drop the rear end out so i will take a look to see if it looks like a big deal to do or not.. anybody have any pic's of them installed?
 
I have lowers and will get some uppers some time.

One thing over the fox's you have to do a little cutting to get the lowers to fit correctly and into the hole were they go. For some reason Ford made that hole smaller on the 94+ than the fox.

For the price a well worth it mod/add on...much like sub frame connectors.
 
i found a set on ebay for $63 shipped both upper and lower so i went ahead and bought them... i figured for $63 it's not worth the time to try and figure out how to fab my own...
 
So how easy are these torque boxes ripped? Do I need to get me a set if i am running et streets with my new motor?

This is a question I've been asking myself. I understand Ford improved the torque boxes on our SN-95's from the Fox design, so we wouldn't need to reinforce them. Of course, I'm sure that's with the stock setup or mild mods. Has anyone had their torque boxes rip on a car that's never been to the track? Just curious. :shrug:
 
I don't have pics, but mine WERE ripping from the body at the welds. They just aren't that well put together, and it's not really on a firm piece of frame material. The lowers are better than the uppers for sure, but I would reinforce everything you possibly can. There is also something called the Stangbox or Z box or something which replaces a lot of that stuff down there and makes it stout as a hammer. I personally started remanufacturing it all for my proper weight distribution and out of thicker metal etc. but then i wrecked my car, and now i'm looking for a new one, so no pics, sorry :(
 
My car had never been to the track. I also didn't do alot of drop the clutch and let it rip take offs. I pulled up to get my car dynoed and the tech looked at the front of the lca and said "NO". I went and found the torque boxes and now everything is still solid even after a few passes at the track. You could see where mine were actually enlarging the slot the lca attaches to.

those of you with the battle boxes installed.

where did you relocate the ABS sensor wire to?
the lower reinforcement plates cover the hole the sensor passes through.

i know i can drill a hole through the plates like this guy did.

I ended up drilling through the plates. I couldn't find any easier way to route it. It only takes about 20 minutes to drill through it with a hole bit.

I still have the stock torque boxes (dont know for how much longer) Car pulls 1.6-1.7 60' on slicks and they are still 1-peice, lol. But I had another stang that tore the upper torque box on the passenger side with just "spirited driving":D. The bushings and control arms your using can play a big role in how long they last also.
 
Those torque box reinforcements are more for the other end of the track. When you get up in speed with slicks on, the back end of the car starts to move back and forth. This back and forth motion causes the lower control arms to act like a wrench pulling back and forth on that bolt that mounts to the body. This is where most of the damage to the torque boxes is done. It deforms the shape of the torque box which leads to other failures.
