The front torque boxes are welded between the front framerail and the inner rocker panel directly beneath the toeboard. Convertibles had them installed on both sides. 67 Coupes and fastbacks had them only on the driver's side until 1968 and up then they were installed on both sides.
They are a structural component used to prevent the unibody from twisting.

IN 68 non-verts there are 4.....2 in the rear 2 in the front
in 67 non-verts there are 3.....2 in the rear 1 in the front
in 65 (like years)...there are only 2...both in the rear.
Adding front t-boxes to a 65 is an excellent way to stiffen the unibody and make a much better performing car, it is a modification though, so if you have intention for a 'concourse correct' car you don't install them. I put them in my 65 fastback and you can simply order the 67-8 t-boxes from any mustang supplier and installed them with some work(assuming you can weld). They tie the outer rocker the the subframe.

t-box can ussually be installed with no impact to the paint. I put the 2 in the front of mine without a problem. They weld underneath the car and in the wheel wells behind the splash shields
I am thinking of adding front torque boxes to my 66 coupe, but the floors and one front frame rail have already been replaced (the otehr frame rail was still good). Now I'm worried that the torque boxes should have been installed while the floor was out. Does anyone know if torque boxes can just be welded in without removing the floors (or any other labor intesive tasks)?

To be done correctly you will have to cut the toe board where it is welded to the inner rocker and slide the lip up through that slot and weld. Still no big thing but if you do not do this you will lose strength and triangulation of the torque box.

The box is completely installed and weld in place.
We slip the toe board extension along the side, the box is slide up from the bottom and the lip comes through the hole in the floor. We then weld the box to the top of the rocker as seen in the pic and the weld the cut floor to the box along the seam and drilled a few holes and did some plunge welding for good measure.
There is less rattles and creaks in the car after installing front boxes.
