I have an '86 Lincoln Mark VII LSC-
5L HO/AOD
billet underdrives
3.08 gears (stock for now)
MAC 1 5/8" shorties
gutted h-pipe
flows (40 series with turn-downs)
17" Bullitt wheels
coil spring converted (no more leaky air bags)
pro comp upper & lower intakes
70mm EGR Delete 2" spacer and
70mm BBK throttle body...

the car has sat for nearly eleven years, and I have recently had the pleasure of saving it from the crusher... My question is this... I have replaced the throttle body and it came with a TPS, when I bolted it on, it was calibrated perfectly for my car somehow. It had surged badly prior to the installation of the new TB w/ TPS. The idle was a little high, so I backed it down where it needs to be, now it surges sometimes.

My friend had this little thing that connected between the TPS and the harness that is supposed to correct bad signals from a faulty TPS, increase throttle response, etc... I have noticed no difference and my car still surges a little, just like it does with out this lil black box installed. Its an $80 part through jegs or summit, but i cant for the life of me figure out how to notice its there.

My friend I got it from said there were a few simple steps to calibrate it on the vehicle, but i cant get the red light to go off... or keep the green light on. If anyone knows anything about this, please reply! i love my car, but this is kinda driving me bonkers...

That little box is a gimmick. Don't waste your money on it. Take it off and learn how to properly adjust idle first.

Step #1, anytime you adjust the idle screw, you MUST reset the computer. This applies to switching throttle bodies, or the iac as well. Unplug the idle air controller and using the throttle stop screw, back the idle down to the lowest point before it won't continuously run. Now, unplug the computer for 15 mins. Hook it back up, plug the iac back in and start it. Let it idle for a few mins to relearn idle strategy.

Anytime you adjust the idle screw, you must reset.

Also, while you are resetting the computer, take the iac off and clean out the inside. The plunger likes to gunk up and causes issues with adjusting idle which can lead to a surge. This is most likely the culprit.

As for the tps, it's non-adjustable. There is nothing to calibrate. At idle, tps voltage should be between 0.5v and 1.1v. If it is, your tps is set correctly. If it's out of thismrange, loosen the two tps screws and twist to get voltage in range.

Also, dump the check engine codes as this will give you more clues to the culprit.

But that $80 tps gimmick is not an good mod. Of you bought it, toss it on eBay and get some money back.

Also, read this post #3

http://www.stangnet.com/mustang-forums/626583-surging-idle-checklist.html

Needless to say, start by dumping codes as there are many possible causes for surging idle

Yes, you can do it that way. Just pull the negative off and hit the brake pedal a few times and let it sit for 15 mins
