I have a trac loc 28 spline 9" rear end and the shop that is installing my G-bar rear is concerned that I am going to blow it up. I have a blown small block that is putting out 402 rwhp and 414 rwtq. Should I be worried? They are recommending purchasing a different type of posi that does not have clutches and stepping up to 31 spline axles. What do you guys think? Should I bite the bullet now or take a gamble with what I have?

The big worry I have is not blowing up the 3rd member but if it hurt the housing when she blows. I will have brackets welded on for the G-bar suspension and it would be a pain to transfer that over to the new rear housing.

theres no answer to how long it will live. I have ran my 8" Currie TSD for about 14 years with numerous nitrous launches,4500 rpm clutch drops and just beating the crap out of it.Until it breaks, its staying in. As long as you arent running slicks, it should last you a while.

Sounds to me like they're trying to sell you more stuff. If the clutches go out, that hurts nothing. If an axle breaks ? You never know what will happen, but I've never heard of this trashing the whole rear housing. You can upgrade to 31 spline axles, but the pinion shaft will still be the small 28 spline unit. It'll break before the axles will.

Thanks for the help guys. I have decided after doning much research in the last few hours and your input I am going to leave it as it is for now. I think my T5 will likely give up first so I will save my money for a TKO 600 when the time comes.

I have the same setup and just started install on my G-bar. Going with a gforce T5 so i'll be ok with that trans. Are trac loc too weak for 400HP? Sure hope not. Guess i will install and drive the car, have fun, if it blows, then replace the 3rd member.

Rear end guy said that trac loc's are good for 400-450 hp and the newer version is good for 650 hp. I thought about going with the g force t5 but I heard they are pretty noisy compared to a TKO 600. Either one would work great for my combo.

I got done with the G-bar install today and it looks great. The shop where it is at is filming a pilot episode for a show like American Hot Rod and they are showing the build of my car on it. I am pretty excited if it makes it on the air but who knows.

No discount for me but I am sure they will treat me right when it is all said and done. I have already referred a couple people to them to have work done.

I am running a normal T5 right now. If/when I blow up the T5 I will go to a TKO. I don't believe I need to modify the tunnel to fit in my 68 but I have heard people who drive 65-66's may or may not have to modify.

I don't really remember what usually goes first. All I know is mine is rated for about 260 ft lb of torque.

What efi are you using? I am looking at a 94 Bronco 351 with efi to drop in to my 70.

The later T5Z transmissions are rated at 330 ft lb of torque. From what I heard, these are tested under constant torque conditions, so unless there is heavy abuse, they should hold up ok for normal driving even with a stout motor. At least I hope so

I thought about the TKO as well, but the research and info I got was that the tunnel would have to be cut/clearanced even in the 67/68 cars in order to get the proper driveline angle. As I recall, there were a lot of guys that insisted this was the case as well as it not being the case. I didn't want to hack my tunnel, so went the T5z route. Also didn't want noisy gears, so shyed away from G-Force. Not sure what the real answer is on this one, I think the jury is still out.

I am using the EFI system from a 90 mustang. At least it started out that way. The only thing left from that engine is the block, crank, rods and fuel rails. Everything else is aftermarket. If I were to do it again I think I would have used a roller 351 block then did the same build I did by using Mustang based parts(except for a 351 lower intake). After stroking it to 427 cu inches of course.

The only thing I am unsure of with my dream combo is how the stock 5.0 computer would react to an engine that was 427 cu inches.

If I was going to buy a new tranny I would want one that would hold up better than ok. I can understand the reservations about cutting the floor, I don't want to either. I have a buddy that put a TKO in his 68 convertible, a dark horse performance kit, and did not have any clearance problems. One other thing that I have in my favor is I needed to use lowering engine mounts from RMP for the upper intake to clear the hood. That should give me a little more room for the TKO. I hope I will never have to buy one but I will be ready when I do. Well ready for everything but to write the check.

oops, had not thought of needing to lower the engine for the efi intake! The Bronco 351 looks taller than the mustang 50 intake. The gforce i am getting is a reman unit for 1200 from someone who decided to go automatic just after buing the trans. Almost too good to be true.

I dont' think most people have to lower the engine with and EFI but my combo of aftermarket intake and taller convertible motor mounts are the reason why. I would think that even with a EFI 351 with an aftermarket intake you could fit it in there if you used lowering mounts. Probably slip it in there with a stock intake and stock motor mounts.

I would go with the GForce as well if I ran across a deal like that. Want to sell it for $1300? Make a profit and you don't have to do anything. Sounds pretty tempting doesn't it. Or how about cash and exchange you for my T5 with new seals, tail housing bushing and new steel bearing retainer.

I'm just joking, unless you take me up on it.
